Sigh. The Chicago Bears are adding unwelcome injury news to the insult of a 52-21 shellacking that came at the hands of the Detroit Lions in Week 2.

Sunday’s loss to the Lions was an organizational failure from top to bottom. And while all eyes are on the front office, coaching staff, and players, we should probably be cognizant of the medical staff’s handling of cornerback Jaylon Johnson’s injury. The optics here are that the Bears might have brought Johnson back too soon. So to rush him back only to watch him go down with potentially a worse injury would be damning. As it stands, it is a damaging bit of news both for Jaylon Johnson and the Bears.
Jaylon Johnson suffered the injury in the first half of the loss to the Lions after breaking up a pass play. The Pro Bowl cornerback left the game and was originally listed as questionable to return, but was ruled out in the third quarter and never re-entered the game.
If you’ll recall, Johnson began training camp on the non-football injury list because of a groin injury sustained during a “freak accident” in the offseason. The injury caused him to miss the entire preseason and Week 1. Johnson also dealt with a calf injury leading up to Week 1, which the cornerback says came while overcompensating for the groin injury. It’s all a problem. And for Johnson, the injury could require surgery. That is still to be determined. In any case, it will keep him out for the foreseeable future.
