PALOS VERDES ESTATES — Heading into the fourth quarter of Friday’s football game, all signs pointed to a Palos Verdes victory against visiting Edison.
Through the first three quarters, PV’s defense limited Edison to 143 yards and just two first downs.
But Edison capitalized in the fourth, scoring 14 points before Blaise Burwell blocked Niko Dragin’s 33-yard field goal to escape with a 21-20 nonleague victory over Palos Verdes.
“Our defense kept us in the football game,” Edison coach Jeff Grady said. “We made some plays on offense when we needed them and got a huge stop at the end of the game.”
With 4:49 to play in the third quarter, PV (2-2) began moving the ball from midfield. A 16-yard pickup from the Edison 24 put the ball at the Chargers 8.
After moving the ball to the 1, Ryan Rakowski and the Sea Kings offense stalled before turning the ball over on downs.
“I have a problem with my play call on the 2-inch line. That one is on me. Run the football,” PV coach Guy Gardner admitted.
Edison (3-1) stormed back, moving the ball past midfield before Ryder Chapman’s 42-yard touchdown reception on a double-pass made it a 20-14 game with 8:06 to play.
When asked about the resolve defensively moving forward, Gardner put it simply.
“Just get better,” he said.
PV attempted to ride the steady hand of its offensive line and Dominik Hernando (99 yards on 29 carries) to close out the game.
“I thought our offense was playing hard, (Hernando) was running hard, and we were doing enough on the offensive line to make it happen,” Gardner said.
Hernando fumbled on the second play of the ensuing drive, giving Edison the ball at the 35.
Following a personal foul on the Sea Kings, Edison’s Samuel Edmisten’s 13-yard touchdown catch made it a 21-20 game with 5:46 to play.
With a chance to win the game, PV drove downfield, eating up 63 yards to put Dragin within range for a go-ahead field goal.
“We did some self damage, too. We had a nice drive at the end to give ourselves a chance, but it’s not just one thing,” Gardner said. “You have to take care of the ball against a good team.
PV took a 7-0 lead on its second possession behind Rakowski’s 3-yard scoring run.
Edison tied the game on an 82-yard Ayden Degiacomo TD catch, before PV took a 13-7 lead following a pair of Charger personal fouls that set up Rakowski’s 6-yard scoring run
Rakowski finished with 213 all-purpose yards, including 95 rushing, and three TDs. Nick Yakubik’s third-quarter interception set up Morley Boyd’s 16-yard TD catch that gave PV a 20-7 lead.
Following an offside call on the point-after, Gardner elected to go for two. Despite failing to convert, Gardner said he didn’t second-guess his play call.
“It’s early in the game. They went offside, so it put us closer. I would do that most every time,” Gardner said. “If we would have converted, then it’s a different story. That’s football.”
