WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (KDVR) — Hundreds of students from multiple schools within the Jefferson County School District walked out of class Friday to protest gun violence and show solidarity for Evergreen High School.
On Wednesday at 12:24 p.m., a student opened fire both inside and outside of the school, resulting in three people being injured, one of whom was the shooter, who later died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

FOX31 interviewed parents and students during the walkouts. A mom of a student at Wheat Ridge High School, Sarah Roman, said they wanted to show their support during this time.
"We want to show support for the trauma that happened in our community and our hearts go out to everyone impacted up in Evergreen," said Roman.
Roman said she was proud of her son for participating in the walkout because it helps teens have a voice, noting that they aren't of voting age yet. She also explained that the fear of her kids being in a school where a shooting could happen is very real and her heart breaks for the Evergreen community.
"It's really hard sending your kids off to school every day knowing it's a daily occurrence in our country that we’ve come to accept, I guess," Roman said. "It's hard to say bye to them every day knowing that possibility exists."

"We’ve been learning about gun violence and what to do in that situation since kindergarten and that is not okay," said Delilah Fushimi, a junior at Wheat Ridge High School.
Fushimi was one of the organizers of the event and she said to FOX31 that most of her classmates are still in shock that a shooting happened at a school in their district. She also said sadly that this is the reality of the world we are living in.
"We're kids out here protesting our right to live in a classroom and survive school," Fushimi said.

"It's something I think about a lot, like who would I text? Would I take a video?" Fushimi said. "Would I defend my classmates?"
Many cars driving by were honking, showing support for the hundreds of students.
"That is something we are very grateful for," Fushimi said. "It means people are seeing what’s going on and are willing to address it."
