Shuffling Through ’85: Bears Dominate Patriots In Super Bowl Preview ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

This year marks the 40th anniversary of one of the greatest Super Bowl runs and teams in NFL history – the 1985 Chicago Bears. All season long, we’ll go week by week, documenting the Bears‘ dominating run from Week 1 through the Super Bowl XX win in New Orleans.

Week 2: Bears 20, Patriots 7

The Bears’ defense picked up in Week 2 where it left off in Week 1 with a dominant performance against the Patriots at Soldier Field. They forced New England into four turnovers, sacked Tony Eason six times, and held the Pats’ offense to just 206 total yards. Chicago also absolutely dominated the time of possession, spending 37:25 with the ball compared to New England’s 22:35.

Offensively, Chicago didn’t necessarily put on a clinic, but they played good complementary football and took care of the ball, which was enough to win.

Quarterback Jim McMahon went 13-for-21 and threw for 232 yards with one touchdown and one interception. On the ground, star running back Walter Payton was held in check with just 39 yards on 11 carries. Thomas Sanders chipped in with 37 yards on the ground, and fullback Matt Suhey had 36.

Wide receiver Dennis McKinnon got the Bears on the board when he hauled in a 32-yard touchdown reception from McMahon. Suhey scored later on a one-yard touchdown run. And rookie kicker Kevin Butler went 2-for-2 on his field goals.

The lone Patriots score came on a 90-yard TD pass from Tony Eason to Craig James late in the fourth quarter.
