Cubs vs Rays — If it feels like the Cubs almost never play the Rays, that’s because they don’t. From what I could muster in my half-ass internet research, the Rays and Cubs have met only 22(!) times in the regular season, which is the fewest for the Cubs among all active teams. By contrast, the Cubs have faced the Pirates 2,618 times since 1887 (source).
This weekend, the Cubs will host the Rays for three of the last nine regular-season games at Wrigley Field this year. After this series (all 1:20 start times, all on Marquee), the Cubs will hit the road to face the Pirates and Reds before heading back home to finish the season.
If the Cubs won out, they’d finish with 99 wins. If they go .500, they’ll finish with 91. My guess is they end up somewhere in between those two. That’s probably not enough to reclaim the division, but it should be enough to secure the top Wild Card slot.
As for this series, I have but one goal, in two parts: Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd pitch effectively and stay healthy. The former can probably be unleashed as he missed enough time to keep pushing right on through the postseason. But the latter, Boyd, who’s pitching this afternoon, could probably stand to be on a bit of pitch count. Maybe like 80 pitches.
Boyd bounced back nicely his last time out against the Nats (7.0 IP, 7H, 2ER, 0BB, 3K). But remember, he had been in a bit of a rut before that, with 13 ER over 16.2 IP against the Brewers, Giants, and Rockies.
In the middle game, Colin Rea will take the mound in what will be his 25th start of the year. He hasn’t been a particularly effective member of the Cubs rotation this season (4.20 ERA), but boy has he been a valuable one. I really don’t know where the Cubs would be without Rea’s 141.1 innings of playable baseball.
Offensively, you know the deal. The Cubs are still in a rut and Kyle Tucker is still on the IL.
