With Josh Giddey officially back in red, we can set our sights on the start of the Chicago Bulls’ 2025-26 season.
The preseason will tip off in less than a month (Oct. 7) and will feature a total of five games. Then, six days after their final exhibition contest, they will welcome the Detroit Pistons into the United Center for the start of the regular season (Oct. 22). While this has typically felt like a favorable first matchup, times have changed for the Pistons. They are winners of three straight over Chicago, and the last two were by double digits.
Likewise, home openers have been a major problem for the Bulls in recent years. The last time they left the United Center with a win came in 2021-22 against the New Orleans Pelicans. Since then, they’ve suffered a 32-point loss to the Cavs, a 20-point loss to the Thunder, and a 19-point loss to the Thunder. I know … yikes!
I think it’s safe to say the Chicago Bulls’ roster is set in stone. The signing of Josh Giddey put the organization at 15 guaranteed contracts for next season. Could they always surprise us with a last-second trade or a waiving of a player? Sure, but I think we both know that would be very out of character for this front office. Heck, I wouldn’t even expect much drama around the two-way roster spots. All three are currently filled, and one of the spots is owned by second-round pick Lachlan Olbrich. He isn’t going anywhere. Is it possible that a training camp invite impresses enough to convince the front office to swap out Emanuel Miller or Yuki Kawamura? I suppose. But the former has held the spot since last season, while Kawamura recently impressed at Summer League. Arturas Karnisovas and Marc Eversley clearly have a legitimate interest in both players, and I’d be surprised to see them give up on either so early in this season. Anyhow, if you want a refresher on this year’s upcoming roster, I put that together on Wednesday. You’ll always find each player’s salary. Overall, this is a very inexpensive Bulls roster, which gives them plenty of flexibility moving forward. With Josh Giddey Finally Signed, the 2025-26 Chicago Bulls Roster is Full More money always comes with higher expectations. Josh Giddey may not have inked a max deal, but the Bulls certainly paid him like a long-term starter. With that in mind, the pressure to replicate much of what we saw over the final two months of last season will immediately fall on his shoulders. Now, do I think we have to see him average 21+ points a night from the jump to feel good about the contract? Not necessarily, but I will have a very close eye on his scoring efficiency and free-throw attempts. Giddey showed noticeable improvement in his shot selection and touch after the All-Star break. He shot 50.0 percent from the field, as well as a staggering 45.7 percent from downtown! Of course, there is no way the latter holds up, but what about maintaining something close to the former? Rather than settling for low-percentage floaters, Giddey finally showed a willingness to use his six-foot-eight frame around the rim. He looked a lot more comfortable and confident finishing inside, and I expect to see a similar mentality from the jump. This also led to nearly 6.0 free throw attempts per game compared to his 2.2 free throw attempts pre-All-Star break. Now that Giddey has some proof of concept and the payday, the charity stripe must remain an important part of his game. I’m willing to accept that Giddey is likely never going to become a true knockdown jump shooter. His shooting motion is just too stiff and too slow. However, he did shoot 37.8 percent from long range last season on a career-high 4.0 attempts per game, and we saw particularly strong growth as a catch-and-shoot threat. For Giddey to be the impact player on a winning team, creating some kind of consistency behind the arc is essential. The more opposing defenses have to defend him along the perimeter, the more space he has to do what he does best and set up his teammates. I remain very in favor of that signing and believe that Jones can help this team A LOT. He has built a reputation for being an extremely reliable and careful distributor. To be sure, he doesn’t possess nearly the same upside or all-around skillset as Giddey, but he is rarely going to look out of sorts when in the lineup. So in the event that Giddey looks out of sorts, I would expect noise for more Jones to get pretty loud. Hopefully, this just serves as extra motivation for Giddey. Adam Silver would probably like to take back one of his comments from yesterday’s press conference. The commissioner was asked about the affordability of some streaming services and how the NBA may be harder for certain fans to access. Instead of sympathizing with those customers, he simply spoke about all the “highlights” that fans can get for free.“There is a huge amount of our content that people can essentially consume for free. This is essentially a highlight-based sport. So Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, any service … there is an enormous amount of content out there., YouTube is another example, that is advertising-based that consumers can consume.”
Oof. If Silver’s whole job is to grow the game, telling people to watch highlight reels sure doesn’t feel like the best way to do it. Why is the goal not to make the entire game itself more accessible or more entertaining to watch? I understand that money is always the main motivator, but a comment like this basically tells consumers that the league doesn’t care if they sit down to watch the actual product.
