CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- As President Trump called the deadly Charlotte light rail stabbing "horrible" this weekend, North Carolina leaders are now adding their voices and pushing for action.
Both Governor Josh Stein and U.S. Senator Thom Tillis said the attack that took the life of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska should never have happened, and they’re pointing to staffing shortages, accountability failures, and the need for stronger public safety measures across the state.
Gov. Stein: "We need more cops on the beat."
"I am heartbroken for the family of Iryna Zarutska, who lost their loved one to this senseless act of violence, and I am appalled by the footage of her murder," Stein said Monday, following Trump’s weekend comments.
He’s now calling on the North Carolina General Assembly to take action by passing his law enforcement recruitment and retention package, a plan designed to help struggling police and sheriff’s departments fill vacancies across the state.
"We need more cops on the beat to keep people safe. That’s why my budget calls for more funding to hire more well-trained police officers," Stein shared. "I call upon the legislature to pass my law enforcement recruitment and retention package to address vacancies in our state and local agencies so they can stop these horrific crimes and hold violent criminals accountable."
Sen. Tillis: "Tragic consequences when weak-on-crime."
Senator Thom Tillis also responded to the case with strong words, linking the tragedy to what he calls failures in the criminal justice system, especially around repeat offenders.
"In Charlotte and other cities across the country, communities have seen the tragic consequences when weak-on-crime judges and prosecutors fail to hold violent, repeat offenders accountable," Tillis said. "The horrific murder of Iryna Zarutska should have never happened, and I send my deepest condolences to her family."
President Trump: "It was horrible."
During a stop in Maryland on Sunday, Trump was asked by a reporter whether he had seen the surveillance footage of Zarutska’s killing, which has spread widely and sparked outrage.
“It was horrible,” Trump said. “I’ll know all about it by tomorrow.”
On Monday, Trump addressed the stabbing again at the Religious Liberty Commission.
"I just give my hope and love to the family of the young woman who was stabbed this morning or last night in Charlotte by a madman, a lunatic, just got up and started...it's right on the tape. Not really watchable because it's so horrible. Just viciously stabbed, she's just sitting there. So there are evil people; we have to be able to handle that. If we don't handle that, we don't have a country," Trump said.
A random, deadly attack
Zarutska was stabbed to death in an unprovoked attack aboard the LYNX Blue Line on August 22. Transit security video shows the suspect, Decarlos Brown, calmly stabbing her in the neck three times before walking away. The two did not know each other.
Charlotte leaders, including Mayor Vi Lyles, have expressed grief and called for a reexamination of transit safety. Meanwhile, the Charlotte Area Transit System confirmed it is short 35 officers and does not have security present on every train or platform.
