A stretch of southbound Interstate 5 that was closed since 9 p.m. Friday opened Sunday afternoon, almost 15 hours ahead of schedule, Caltrans reported.
“Southbound Interstate 5 between State Route 52 and Mission Bay Drive has opened ahead of schedule,” according to the message, which was posted on X at about 2 p.m. “Thank you for your patience and for your support.”
The freeway was closed alongside the eastern reaches of La Jolla and Pacific Beach to allow for road and drainage improvements, Caltrans said. It was supposed to be closed until 5 a.m. Monday.
“The I-5 Asset Management Project will ensure that the southern segment of I-5 remains in a state of good repair while improving ride quality and reducing maintenance needs in the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista and National City from Camino De La Plaza to just south of Via De La Valle,” the agency said.
“This vital effort is focused on preserving existing infrastructure, improving safety and modernizing the corridor to meet current and future transportation needs.”
