Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops is under fire after a disastrous end to the first half against Ole Miss.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 10-0 lead on Saturday afternoon against Ole Miss, but the Rebels ended up taking a 17-13 lead into the halftime break. The Wildcats had an opportunity to potentially put a few more points on the board just before the half, but came up well short due to some questionable decision-making from Stoops and the Kentucky coaching staff.
After initially appearing to be content to run the clock out with just over 1 minute left in the half, Kentucky changed its strategy after Seth McGowan ripped off a big run to get the ball to midfield.
The Wildcats ended up on the plus-40 yard line with 13 seconds left in the half, but didn’t have any remaining timeouts due to mistakes earlier in the game. Disaster struck at that point with Kentucky unable to get lined up correctly on its next play, resulting an an ineligible receiver down field penalty.
Then, from the 45-yard line and firmly out of field goal range, Kentucky was called for holding on the next play as more time ticked off the clock.
Facing a 1st and 25 with just 4 seconds left in the half, Kentucky ended the half with an illegal forward lateral by Zach Calzada. That disappointing end to the half caught the attention of college football media and Kentucky fans alike. Here’s the best of that reaction:
Literally took themselves out of Field Goal range and three potential points off the boardOne consistent thing from the beginning of the Stoops era has been just completely falling apart in the last 2 minutes of a half
— Matt Jones (@KySportsRadio) September 6, 2025Kentucky just ran the worst two minute drill in the history of football. Not even debatable. We'll be telling our grandkids about this 50 years from now
— Aaron Torres (@Aaron_Torres) September 6, 2025ESPN’s Sean McDonough with a telling quote:“Kentucky gets the ball to start the second half. Maybe they’ll defer.” pic.twitter.com/GmxLZSxMNC
— Daniel Hager (@DanielHagerOn3) September 6, 2025Death. Taxes. And Mark Stoops being confused and unable to execute basic time management of a game. #BBN pic.twitter.com/aQgGQ7DzUf
— Jspa (@jspalding79) September 6, 2025Stop me if you’ve heard this before…Horrible end of first half clock management from Mark Stoops.
— Daniel Hager (@DanielHagerOn3) September 6, 2025Kentucky took a Timeout to then come out and punt Took two more because the play didn’t get in/players were confused And then go out of FG range bc they lost those timeouts and were confused againThat’s preparation and it’s on the staff and it’s pitiful
— Matt Jones (@KySportsRadio) September 6, 2025Still trying to figure out what Stoops was doing at the end of the first half.
— Myron Medcalf (@MedcalfByESPN) September 6, 2025Stoops has proven year after year that he has zero discipline. Whether on the field or off the field, it’s constant mistakes and bone headed results. That last series was a perfect summary of him since he’s lost solid coaches around him.
— Andrew Campbell (@DrewRoc24) September 6, 2025Is it possible JMI can go ahead and throw us about 40 million to end this Stoops experience. @ryanlemond @DrewFranklinKSR @KySportsRadio
— John Johnson (@JJPops21) September 6, 2025One last thing on this time mismanagement deal. Stoops has got to know his staffs suck at these things. Why not hire a numbers nerd to tell him exactly what to do in these situations.
