Believe it or not, it’s been 27 years since Freaks and Geeks first hit television screens.
Linda Cardellini marked the anniversary of the beloved series on Instagram on Friday, September 25, sharing several behind-the-scenes throwback photos of the cast from their days on set.
“27 years ago?!? Time flies. Sending love to all the freaks and geeks out there,” she captioned the post.
View this post on InstagramThe trip down memory lane immediately brought longtime viewers into the comments, with many still questioning how a show that became so beloved was canceled after just one season.
“Boy did NBC fumble ball on that show. They had the best show on TV and did not even know what to do with it. We need a class reunion show,” one fan wrote.
“This show needed more time. I enjoyed it. I will never get over the fact that they canceled it,” said another.
A third agreed, commenting, “I will never get over Freaks and Geeks only having one season. A crime!”
A fourth called the cancellation “The worst decision in TV history.”
Cardellini wasn’t the only cast member celebrating. Samm Levine shared a throwback of his own on Instagram, joking, “Happy 27th anniversary from the toughest jocks in your gym class.”
Why was Freaks and Geeks canceled?
Created by Paul Feig and executive-produced by Judd Apatow, Freaks and Geeks premiered on NBC in 1999 and followed two groups of teenage outsiders navigating high school in suburban Michigan during the 1980-81 school year.
Alongside Cardellini and Levine, its stacked cast included James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Busy Philipps, Martin Starr, and John Francis Daley, several of whom went on to become major Hollywood stars.
But the series struggled to find a large audience during its original run. Its Saturday night time slot didn’t help, while inconsistent scheduling and lengthy gaps between episodes made things even harder. NBC canceled the show in 2000 after only one season and 18 episodes.
Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter ranked Freaks and Geeks the No. 1 teen drama of all time, praising the show’s humor, emotional depth and memorable characters.
