WESTMINSTER – Waldo Castrejon was everywhere for Calvary Chapel in Friday’s 27-14 victory over Westminster.

Castrejon ran for 193 yards and two touchdowns, then helped anchor a defense which held Westminster to minus-12 yards rushing and frustrated the Lions at nearly every turn.

“Honestly, at the end of the game we wanted to just put the knife in and end them,” said Castrejon, who had the second of three interceptions by the Eagles defense.

Colin Wiles connected with Garret Lindsey for two touchdown passes, the first a 7-yard hookup with gave the Eagles (3-0) the 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the first quarter.

The Lions (1-2) junked the run after netting 3 yards on their first possession. They recovered a Wiles fumble at their 18.

Quarterback Beckham Sharp shook off a 10-yard sack, finding Julias Garcia for 37 yards and Jason Guzman for 18 yards on consecutive plays for first-and-goal at the 6. Two plays later, Sharp found Guzman for a 6-yard TD and a tie.

Noah Pedraza intercepted a deflected Wiles pass, but the Lions gave the ball right back when Daniel Nieves intercepted Sharp’s first-down throw. The Eagles converted this time, with Wiles hitting Guzman for an 11-yard score with 37 seconds left in the first half.

“Defensively, the goal was to stop the run and make them pass, and force interceptions, and that’s what we did tonight,” Castrejon said.

He struck two crushing blows in less than a minute in the third quarter.

After forcing a punt on Westminster’s opening possession of the second half, went 63 yards on nine plays, aided by two Westminster penalties, with Castrejon scoring from 9 yards out with for a 27-7 lead with 6:35 remaining in the quarter. He had the ball back in his hands seven seconds later, intercepting a pass bobbled by Sharp’s receiver.

Westminster scored again on Sharp’s 8-yard scoring pass to Nieves with 12 seconds left in the third quarter, but could get no closer.

Its next possession ended with a bad punt snap, then turned the ball over on downs, giving it up to Calvary Chapel’s clock-chewing offense.

Giles threw for 108 yards, completing 12 of 21passes.

Sharp completed 18 of 26 for 180 yards, with Guzman catching nine balls for 88 yards.

“I think our team played an amazing game,” Castrejon said. “We wanted to come out tonight and hit ‘em hard, and it looks like we did it.”
