Police in a northern suburb of Chicago are searching for a person who recently vandalized a synagogue with antisemitic graffiti.
Around 8:30 p.m. Aug. 31, an unidentified person spray painted a “phallic symbol” in the parking lot of the Congregation Or Shalom, located at 21 West Hawthorn Parkway in Vernon Hills, as well as the words “hate jews” on an interior-facing wall, police said.
Vernon Hills police are working closely with Congregation or Shalom staff and regional security partners, and investigators are “aggressively” pursuing leads to identify the person responsible, police said.
“Regardless of the particular target, hate crimes are an attack on our entire community,” said Vernon Hills Police Chief Patrick L. Kreis. “Conduct of this kind has no place in Vernon Hills.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Vernon Hills Police Department by emailing pdtips@vhills.org.
