This Was News: A bygone view of East Perkins St. in Ukiah ...Middle East

News by : (Ukiah Daily Journal) -

Change is seldom easy, and we all have opinions about how our town should look and function – which businesses should be welcomed with open arms, and which should be given a pass.

Last week’s Ukiah Planning Commission meeting included discussion about several 2025 projects recently approved for Ukiah, including a planned Habit Burger restaurant that may soon occupy the now-vacant former Denny’s building on Pomeroy Street.

The Ukiah Daily Journal’s advance article about the Aug. 27 meeting drew a big response from our readers on Facebook, with hundreds of comments and some strong opinions about what was needed (and not needed) for Ukiah to thrive in the future.

Some wanted the bowling alley and skating rink to return, both of which have been gone from Ukiah for years. As far as chain businesses were concerned, Trader Joe’s, Marshall’s and Target were all mentioned among those some readers were hoping the city would attract, as were Panera Bread Co., Olive Garden and Black Bear Diner.

One person simply said, “A breakfast place would be nice.”

The battle over Walgreens

Twenty years ago, it was a different story. During the spring and summer of 2005, Walgreens’ plans to expand to Ukiah drew the ire of some in the community, when the company proposed building a 14,400-square-foot national chain drug store project on East Perkins Street, where the Video Fair and The Outlet store were then located.

City staff had worked with Walgreens for a year, “but many local residents didn’t realize what the project entailed before it came to the Planning Commission in March (2005), where it was approved” after a few changes were required by the commission, the Daily Journal reported on April 21, 2005.

The City Council asked for some additional changes, before approving the project on June 1, 2005, on a 3-2 vote.

The plan called for Video Fair and The Outlet store to be demolished (which they eventually were), and for 15 towering mature redwood trees at the site to be removed. After loud outcry from the public, some protests, and at least one lawsuit, a few of the redwood trees were saved, but that corner of East Perkins Street, where it meets Hospital Drive, looks markedly different today than it did before early August of 2005, when most of the trees were cut down.

Walgreens is in its 20th year of business at the site in Ukiah, without – as far as I know – any public opposition, although I still miss those trees.
