Wednesday was a fun day for the Cubs’ minor league squads. Iowa and Knoxville both came up clutch in the final inning to earn wins, while Myrtle Beach cruised to an easy W. South Bend’s game was delayed in the fourth inning, so that wasn’t all that much fun. But still, three out of four ain’t bad! Let’s get to it.

Triple-A Iowa Cubs
The Iowa Cubs won a fun one on Wednesday night that came down to the late innings. Jordan Wicks opened for the Cubs and went 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and a run, before Connor Noland took over and allowed the same over 3.2 innings.
Iowa jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Carlos Pérez RBI single, but Omaha came back and tied it right away in the top of the second. The Cubs answered back with runs in both the third and the fourth, though. Nicky Lopez drove in a run with an RBI single of his own in the third, then Owen Caissie brought in another on a sac fly.
Omaha picked up another run in the fifth, making it 3-2, and the score stayed the same until the top of the eighth when the Storm Chasers tied it 3-3. In the bottom half of the frame, though, James Triantos came up big. With one out and a runner on second, Triantos brought in the go-ahead run on an RBI single, and that run would hold up as the winner.

Double-A Knoxville Smokies
The Smokies also took home a win with some late-game heroics in a rain-shortened affair against the Trash Pandas. Rocket City got on the board first with a run in the top of the second, and that 1-0 lead held up all the way until the bottom of the seventh. In the seventh, it was Brett Bateman coming up with the big hit for Knoxville to tie the game with an RBI single with two outs and a full count.
The tie didn’t last long, however. The Trash Pandas came right back in the top of the eighth with a three-run effort off reliever Mitchell Tyranski to take the lead back 4-1.
The three-run deficit was no problem for the Smokies, though! Knoxville fired back with a four-run frame in the bottom half to grab its first lead of the game. First, Corey Joyce had an RBI single. Then Jefferson Rojas chipped in with a sac fly to cut it to 4-3. Following Rojas, Jordan Nwogu drew a bases-loaded walk to tie it. Ethan Hearn capped things off with a go-ahead RBI single to make it 5-4 Smokies. Following the frame, the game was suspended due to rain and eventually called, giving Knoxville the win.

High-A South Bend Cubs – Suspended (Rain)
Not a whole lot from this one. South Bend is trailing Wisconsin 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Timber Rattlers picked up two first-inning runs off Kevin Valdez, and the Cubs scored theirs in the bottom of the second on a Kade Snell sacrifice fly.
Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans
After a pair of high-drama wins, Myrtle Beach cruised to a relatively easy victory on Wednesday against the Fireflies. Columbia did get out to an initial 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but that was all the scoring they would do on the day. Kevin Camacho, Thomas Mangus, Luis A. Reyes, and David Bracho combined to allow just one run and three hits over the course of the matchup.
As for the offense, the big inning came in the bottom of the third when the Pelicans put up five runs. Christian Olivo got the Pelicans on the board with an RBI triple. Ty Southisene followed with an RBI single. Alexey Lumpuy brought in another run with a double. Then Jose Escobar capped off the inning with a two-run single.
In the sixth, Myrtle Beach added another run on a wild pitch. Then in the seventh, Matt Halbach scored two with a double, and in the eighth, an Eli Lovich single made it 9-1, which was the final.
