Appropriate Rest Decisions, the Playoff Race, PCA, Farewell Cowles, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Lots to say about last night’s Cubs game, with plenty of special attention coming on Cade Horton. I’ll save that for his own post …

The Cubs couldn’t pull off the sweep against the Braves, while the Brewers won to push the NL Central lead back to 6.0 games. Like I said yesterday, I’m not watching that one quite as closely as the Wild Card race right now, where the Cubs still hold a 4.0-game lead over the Padres for the top spot (and three home games in the would-be three-game series). Their lead for a Wild Card spot of any position is 9.0 games, and with little more than three weeks left in the season, that’s just about locked up. (Funny aside on that point: the team chasing the Cubs (and Padres and Mets) for a Wild Card spot? It’s not the Reds anymore, as they’ve fallen way off. It’s the Giants, who’ve been scorching hot and are 4.0 games out of a playoff spot now, despite selling at the deadline.) But back to the Cubs just about having at least some Wild Card slot locked up: that’s why a game like last night’s looks like it does. It’s why the Cubs pull Cade Horton after 75 pitches (with a no-hitter going). It’s why Kyle Tucker gets extra caution with the calf tightness. It’s why Pete Crow-Armstrong gets a reset. So on and so forth. It isn’t “punting” on a game – the Cubs still very much want to win – but it is balancing all of the interests of the team. Beating the Braves last night would’ve been great. But preserving Horton is far more important. Resting key players to help keep them on track for the stretch run is far more important. Lose the battle, win the war. That kind of thing. Speaking of which, here’s Craig Counsell on giving PCA a break (Sun-Times): “We’re given the chance with the off day here to give him a real break, and to just kind of give him a reset a little bit …. Just to get him a physical and mental break. And then go into the last, essentially, three and a half weeks of the season hopefully a little bit refreshed …. I think Pete wanted to play. But I looked at this really, frankly, early in the road trip, thinking, where could we get Pete a break? And as the road trip went on, it became obvious to me that we should use this opportunity to get him a little break.” Pete Crow-Armstrong was hitting just .173/.207/.269/22 wRC+ over the last two weeks, and is down to a .250/.290/.493/114 wRC+ slash line on the season. Hopefully he can get hot from here. © Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Speaking broadly about resting players versus going all out in a playoff race, Counsell said, per The Athletic, “None of it’s black and white. I think you do what’s best for the player first. Always, always do what’s best for the player. And then you have other considerations. You learn lessons in doing this. It’s one game. The benefit outweighs it sometimes as much as you want your best players out there. There’s many examples that I’ve learned from the past. You do what’s right for the player, and you’re not making a mistake.” Farwell, Ben Cowles. The Cubs’ utility infielder was claimed off of waivers by the White Sox, so he’s gone from the org. Here’s hoping Jack Neely can turn it around in the years ahead and salvage the Mark Leiter Jr. trade. Kosuke Fukudome was at the game last night!

One of the best #Cubs opener memories at Wrigley Field? How about Kosuke Fukudome in his first MLB game homering off of Eric Gagne in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game. I was absolutely losing my mind. pic.twitter.com/5whO7wCa1D

…did Emmet Sheehan just purposely keep Cam Devanney's 1st hit ball??? t.co/DTxqfeuOjt pic.twitter.com/UR1oCUtelQ

#Dodgers Emmet Sheehan said it was not intentional, he didn’t realize that the ball was being called for and shared he would personally apologize to Cam Devanney for the misunderstanding. t.co/HAjxmOEw1g

— Kirsten Watson (@kirsten_watson) September 4, 2025 It’s not hard to imagine a pitcher wanting to keep a slightly scuffed ball in play, but the question is whether he knew it was being requested as a first hit. There were other camera views that made it a close call on whether he looked over and saw that the Pirates’ bench was asking for the ball.
