It was both a celebration and a tribute to a teammate gone way too soon.

On Aug. 31, the Singapore Disability Sports Council held a ceremony to unveil the nine-swimmer Singapore contingent who’ll compete at the World Para Swimming Championships.

The ceremony also included the revealing of the medal design and a theme song that was performed in memory of the late Colin Soon, a 19-year-old multiple gold medalist at the ASEAN Para Games who died earlier this year.

After the theme song entitled “Calling” was performed by local artist Olivia One and 13-year-old Nur Anisah Daaniys, a goalball athlete who is visually impaired, the emcee of the event said the song is “in loving memory of Colin Soon.”

According to The Straits Times, it marked the first time that the SDSC publicly revealed Soon’s death. In a statement, SDSC said the theme song was adapted from a “music assignment by Team Singapore para-swimmer Colin Soon, who passed away earlier this year.”

“With his family’s blessing, SDCS ensured Colin’s music would live on at the world championships, alongside the teammates he would have joined,” the SDSC said.

There were no further comments from the SDCS on the tribute or Soon’s death.

At the 2023 ASEAN Para Games in Cambodia, Soon, who had a visual impairment known as cone-rod dystrophy, won three gold medals and one silver medal.

Soon captured gold in the men’s S13 50-meter freestyle, the SB13 50-meter breaststroke, and the SB13 100-meter breaststroke. He won silver in the S13 100-meter backstroke.

According to a bio on the team Singapore website, Soon started swimming when he was three years old, when his mother decided he should participate in swimming classes to “brush up his proficiency skills.”

Soon represented Singapore at the 2023 World Para Swimming Championships in Manchester, England. He was hoping to compete in the Paralympics like his older sister, 28-year-old Sophie Soon, who was also diagnosed with cone-rod dystrophy.

Singapore will host the World Para Swimming Championships from Sept. 21 to 27 at the OCBS Aquatic Centre.
