COPs may be legal, but are they fair?

Yes, the city may “own” Cascadia on paper, but let’s be honest — the benefits are not the same as firehouses, libraries or civic buildings the whole community relies on. Those are essential. Cascadia is an entertainment district tied to a private sports franchise whose bottom line comes first.

We’re already seeing the tension play out. Private, exclusive events like the Cattle Baron’s Ball are being set up on land that was supposed to represent a city-led development effort. The public shoulders the financing risk, while private operators reap the rewards.

Legality (which is being challenged) is one thing. Necessity and fairness are another. COPs may be legal, but should they be used to bankroll what amounts to a private playground instead of core public needs?

At a minimum, hosting exclusive fundraisers on land tied to this project is ethically questionable and sends the wrong message to residents. Greeley deserves transparency, accountability, and investments that serve the whole community — not just a privileged few.

Hosting exclusive fundraisers on Cascadia land is ethically questionable, undermines public trust, and raises a simple question: Is this a campaign event?

I whole heartedly support Pam Shaddock’s Guest Opinion article in the Friday, Aug. 29, Greeley Tribune titled “Basic Ethics — The Golden Rule as applied to our government.” She describes the many examples where Trump, his administrative staff or his department heads and their support staff have forgotten the simple adage of “Do unto others as you would want done unto you.” They have performed ICE raids with masked agents on immigrants whom the majority were not violent criminals but those working on farms, service workers or construction workers. Also their various cuts to programs for disadvantaged youths, the aged, and low income people in food assistance and health care insurance is downright cruel and lies when they’ve told the American people we’re “not cutting Medicaid.”

Other examples include how Trump has boasted repeatedly how he could influence Vladimir Putin to bring the Ukraine-Russia war to a ceasefire, or implement severe sanctions on Russia. Trump hasn’t accomplished either while Putin continues to bomb and kill Ukrainian civilians and children. Trump has also declared there is significant starvation in Gaza. However when Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu has stated there is no famine in Gaza, Trump and the U.S. have done nothing to counter Israel’s lies about famine nor provide any food relief for the millions of starving Palestinians.

So please read Pam’s entire article. As she states, the next time you hear Trump, Republicans or others tout their policies, ask yourself “Does this follow the Golden Rule?”

These are not normal times we’re living in

Habitual liar, convicted felon, despicable, vindictive, delusional, unhinged, demented, cheat, unqualified, misogynist, evil, childish, dictator want-to-be, corrupt, untrustworthy, hateful, racist, petty, narcissistic, abuser of women, egomaniac, riot instigator, manipulative, cruel, uncaring, criminal.

Would anyone ever think of calling the president of the United States any of these things? Not under normal circumstances. These are not normal circumstances in which we are living.
