Rochester, N.Y. – Millions of people returned home after a busy Labor Day weekend filled with travel. Whether by car or plane, travelers across the country headed home, leading to crowded roads and airports.
More than 100 flights landed or took off from Rochester International Airport on Monday, adding to the traffic caused by millions of drivers on the road.
“The road is a little bit overcrowded, but it’s okay,” Mayada Algaswaan, who was traveling to Toronto, said.
Scott Smith, traveling from Newfoundland to Elmira, Ontario, shared his experience. “We’ve been gone for two weeks, so this is just an extra day to get home, to have a little bit of extra time away on vacation together,” Smith said.
Smith also commented on the border crossing, saying, “Border crossing was no problem on the way here. I don’t expect to have it on the way back, but it’ll be busier. Definitely a Queenston, but, it should be just fine, I think.”
John Fenney, traveling home to West Virginia from the Adirondacks, noted the pleasant surprise of New York’s gas prices. “Gas is, surprisingly, a lot cheaper than we expected,” Fenney said. “All my previous travels up through here, along the Thruway, the gas was always significantly higher. But here, gas on the Thruway is basically the same as it is off on the regular exits.”
At the Rochester airport, director Andy Moore emphasized the importance of preparation for busy travel days. “We’ve seen more activity coming through the airport,” Moore said. “I meet with our airlines, our concessions, our car rental companies on a regular basis as we start to gear up and prepare for these types of holidays.”
The TSA predicted more than 17 million Americans traveled over the Labor Day weekend. This number is comparable to the 18 million people screened during Thanksgiving last year.
