The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) said they repelled a suicide attack carried out by a suspected Islamic State (ISIS) cell targeting one of their military positions in the northern countryside of Raqqa on Sunday evening, August 31.
In a statement released early Monday, September 1, the SDF said two attackers were involved. One was wounded in clashes before detonating himself, while the second was killed.
Three SDF fighters sustained minor injuries and are in stable condition, according to the statement.
As of the time of publication, Enab Baladi had not recorded any ISIS claim of responsibility for the Raqqa attack through the group’s usual media channels.
ISIS claimed 20 attacks against the SDF in August, most of them in Deir Ezzor (eastern Syria), according to Enab Baladi monitoring. The latest claim came Sunday, when ISIS said it attacked a “PKK” checkpoint, its reference to the SDF, in the village of al-Hawayej in Deir Ezzor countryside, killing two fighters.
Arrest campaign in al-Hasakah
Separately, the SDF announced a large-scale security operation in al-Hasakah (northeastern Syria) targeting ISIS cells, which it said resulted in the arrest of 51 people, including suspects involved in attacks on civilians and security and service centers on August 30.
The SDF said it seized 50 Kalashnikov rifles, 16 pistols, a BKC machine gun, hand grenades, ammunition, and radio devices.
The operation, dubbed “Permanent Security of the People,” lasted 14 hours and involved about 3,000 fighters, including members of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ).
According to the SDF, the campaign came amid intensified ISIS activity across Syria, exploiting chaos and security gaps in several areas of the Syrian desert and government-held interior. It described the operation as a preemptive strike to foil ISIS attempts to reorganize cells and plot attacks on prisons holding its members and leaders, particularly in al -Hasakah.
It added that intelligence indicated ISIS sought to turn al-Hasakah into a hub for its operations, especially in neighborhoods near al-Sina’a Prison and the outskirts of the city.
Allegations of arbitrary arrests
Activists in al- Hasakah accused the SDF of detaining civilians, including women, children, and clerics, who they say have no ties to ISIS.
Nawar al-Rahawi, director of the al-Hasakah Media Center, told Enab Baladi earlier that the SDF arrested Iman al-Wardi, her son Amir, and her brother Khidr al-Wardi.
He said the arrests also included 16-year-old Ali al-Mashouh, who was working in a car repair shop in the industrial zone to support his family, without the SDF announcing reasons for his detention or filing formal charges.
The SDF also arrested Sheikh Imad al-Hassan, imam of al-Tawhid Mosque in the Ghweiran neighborhood, along with another resident of the same area.
Raids targeted several homes, including those of Sufi cleric Mahmoud al-Saleh, known as “al-Mulla,” Saleh al-Salamah “Abu Faiz,” and young men Ghazwan al-Mohammad and Makhlaf al-Aghawat.
Al-Rahawi documented further arrests of Abdul Razzaq Suleiman al-Mandeel, Ahmad al-Hamoud al-Awad, and his brother Othman, during SDF raids on the Aziziyah and Salhiya neighborhoods.
According to him, most of those detained were civilians with no links to ISIS, sparking widespread discontent among residents. He also accused SDF fighters of looting homes during the campaign.
Background: Ghweiran prison
On January 19, 2022, the Ghweiran neighborhood of al-Hasakah witnessed major clashes when ISIS cells infiltrated the area around Ghweiran Prison, one of the largest facilities holding ISIS fighters and commanders detained by the US-led coalition between 2017 and 2022.
The fighting escalated after dozens of inmates managed to breach the prison walls and join ISIS cells positioned in surrounding neighborhoods such as al-Zohour and al-Maqabar. The attack began with a car bomb detonated at the prison’s main gate.
