A 13-year-old riding a motorized minibike was seriously injured in a crash with a vehicle in south suburban Will County, authorities said Sunday.
At approximately 4:20 p.m., deputies with the Will County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Elgin Avenue and Cayuga Street regarding a pedestrian who had been struck by a vehicle, the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
Deputies came upon a 13-year-old who had sustained multiple broken bones and other serious injuries. The child was taken to a local hospital, sheriff’s officials said.
Through a preliminary investigation, deputies determined the teen had been driving the minibike southbound on Cayuga Street when they failed to yield at Elgin Avenue. The minibike then entered the intersection and struck the front passenger side of a westbound SUV, authorities said.
The driver of the SUV wasn’t injured.
In the Facebook post, Will County Sheriff Mike Kelley issued a safety reminder about minibikes and e-scooters.
“…Allowing children to operate motorized vehicles such as minibikes or e-scooters on public roadways is both illegal and extremely dangerous,” he said, in part.
