LSU fans are not happy with the officiating crew working its Week 1 contest against Clemson.
Late in the third quarter, Garrett Nussmeier appeared to find Barion Brown for a go-ahead 29-yard touchdown pass on a beautiful deep ball that was thrown right to the pylon. Brown was initially ruled out at the 1-yard line, but replay intervened.
At that point, ABC’s broadcast crew of Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler believed it would be ruled a touchdown — Brown appeared to cross the plane with the ball in hand. However, replay officials determined Brown did not complete the process of the catch. As he fell to the ground out of bounds, the ball came loose, thus deeming the play incomplete.
Rules analyst Bill Lemonnier was brought on to the broadcast and said he disagreed with the call. He, like Herbstreit and Fowler, believed LSU should have been awarded a touchdown on the play.
Here’s a clip of the controversial moment:
Barion Brown and LSU got screwed. It feels like refs get worse and worse every year. pic.twitter.com/9swkq8eZbD
— Phoenix Stevens (@PStevensKSR) August 31, 2025The incompletion resulted in a third and 11, which LSU did not convert. The Tigers then missed the ensuing field goal attempt and kicker Damion Ramos appeared to injury himself on the play.
Here’s the best of the reaction on social media:
