“It’s a minor setback,” says Jonathon Esparza, the event coordinator for Splash Bar San Jose.
Esparza witnessed the crash and said the driver and passenger were so intoxicated, multiple bars — including his — refused to let them in.
“Those multiple collisions. We knew at that point, especially the patrons here on the street were fearful at that time because we knew at that moment, they didn’t have great intentions being on this street," added Esparza.
Deep grooves left by the car can be seen in the pavement, including on the colorful street mural, which was set for its grand reveal Friday.
Nathan Svoboda is president of the Project More Foundation, which is one of the groups behind the Pride kick-off. He says the damage won’t dim the celebration.
“It’s a milestone, and so we’re vigilant," said Svoboda. "We are a community that has embraced a multitude of different challenges including this year — members of our community, especially our trans community. Our community can thrive amongst whatever circumstances we may face.”
Esparza echoes Svoboda’s message, saying resilience is what the LGBTQ community is known for.
“We’re putting together the first entertainment zone block party in San Jose and we’re making history," said Esparza. "Regardless of an incident yesterday it's still safe to come to post street and you’re still able to be you when you come on our street.”
San Jose police say they are investigating this incident as a suspected DUI case.
