ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Gisele Walker, a first grader at Nazareth Elementary School, is being honored for helping an injured cat that was lying on the street.
She’s among this fall’s recipients of the Do the Right Thing awards. Just days before last Christmas, she saw the cat and worried that the cat would be hit by a car. She called 911 to get help for the animal. Her mom says Gisele is always looking out for others.
Her kindergarten teacher says Gisele is a role model to her classmates, being someone who cares deeply about others.
Nominations are open year-round for the Do the Right Thing awards. Any student in grades K-12 in a Monroe County school is eligible for a nomination. The good deed must have occurred within one year of the nomination. Anyone over 18 years of age can submit a nomination form, including family, friends, school staff, and coaches.
The Rochester Police Department has held the Do the Right Thing awards since 1995. You can learn more about nominating a student here. See past winners here.
