This was a fun one from Greg Wyshynski at ESPN. He went thru all 224 picks in the current NHL draft format and named the best player selected in each spot. There were a number of spots where the Chicago Blackhawks were recognized for making what he considers the best picks ever at their respective spot.
The first Blackhawks pick to be recognized is Corey Crawford, whom Wyshynski names the best 52nd overall pick in history (from 2003). Two slots later he names Duncan Keith (2002) the best-ever 54th overall pick. And three spots after that, Troy Murray (1980) is considered the best-ever 57th overall selection.
And, yes, Wyshynski does have Steve Larmer as the greatest 120th overall pick in NHL history. Blackhawks legend Vinnie Hinostroza was named the best-ever pick at No. 169. At No. 199, the Blackhawks get another mention for drafting Dominik Hašek in 1983.
A few notable names in Blackhawks history who were recognized (though not drafted by Chicago): Marian Hossa earned the call at No. 12; he was drafted by the Ottawa Senators in 1997. Chris Chelios got the nod as a Montreal selection at No. 40 in 1981. Tony Amonte was selected by the Rangers in 1988 and was named at pick No. 68. And the Flyers selecting Patrick Sharp at No. 95 was the best pick there as well.
He had Scott Niedermayer as the best at No. 3, naming Denis Savard as a strong possibility (Jonathan Toews? Maybe worth at least a mention?).
If I might indulge the exercise a bit further than the 224 picks Wyshynski considered, here are a few notable Blackhawks draft picks from beyond the current 7-round format (with 32 teams):
