Anne Hargrave will take the reins as GambleAware’s new CEO, with Zoë Osmond OBE stepping down at the end of September.
The move comes as the charity enters its final few months of operation before a government takeover scheduled for March 2026. Hargrave will oversee that change while directing day-to-day strategy and operations.
From that date onwards, the UK government and its commissioners will assume control of all the organisation’s historical work, leading research, education and treatment services.
Hargrave highlighted the upcoming six months as “critical for the smooth transfer and transition”. She added: “I look forward to continuing to work with the new commissioners as they get to grips with their new responsibilities within the statutory system and will work with them to ensure their efforts build upon the current system’s achievements and insights to ensure learnings are carried forward.”
Hargrave has been with GambleAware since 2021, where she played a key role in the executive team and has led a number of important projects, including the re-commissioning of the National Gambling Support Network.
The new statutory levy, which the organisation had been pushing for, is set to raise £100 million for gambling-related harm prevention and ensures that gambling harms are viewed as a public health issue.
GambleAware’s chair of trustees, Andy Boucher, added: “Over the next several months, we have some important delivery and legacy ambitions, and I am very confident that under Anna’s leadership, we will achieve the positive ending for the charity we are all working towards.
“With a renewed focus on handover activity until the end of March 2026, we will continue to ensure there is a smooth transition to the new statutory system to address gambling harm across Great Britain.”
Upon announcing the closure, Baroness Twycross reiterated that the government would look to build upon the charity’s work and paid tribute to all of its staff.
