Sometimes high school football fans don’t need to wait until the holiday season to receive exactly the gift they have become accustomed to around state tournament time.
If you’re an Eaton Reds fan — or just a small-schools football fan, in general — you couldn’t ask for a better present than what hundreds of well-entertained spectators will unwrap at 7 p.m. Friday.
With state title aspirations of their own this fall, the Reds will open their season at home against The Classical Academy, this past season’s Class 2A state champion.
The Titans are ranked second, behind Wellington, in CHSAA’s 2A preseason rankings.
Eaton is ranked third.

(Jim Rydbom/Greeley Tribune file photo)This is the second consecutive year in which these two teams have opened their football seasons against each other.
A year ago, TCA topped the Reds 28-14 in Colorado Springs. The Titans went on to have a 13-0 campaign and win their first football state title in program history.
Eaton, in pursuit of its fifth state title in program history, would like nothing more than to receive a similar season-starting boost. The Reds would receive just that if they are able to score the upset on their home field this Friday.
Here’s a look at Friday’s matchup:
