The University of Northern Colorado volleyball team won the Big Sky Conference regular-season title in 2024.
Big Sky coaches don’t see the Bears defending their championship.
UNC, which set a program record for wins last year, was picked second in a preseason poll of the conference’s 10 head coaches released Friday. Coaches could not vote for their own team.
Weber State was the coaches’ choice for top team with 74 points and five first-place votes. UNC received 66 points with two first-place votes. Idaho State and Sacramento State tied for third with 65 points. Idaho State University also received two first-place votes.
UNC finished 14-2 in the Big Sky last year and 28-8 overall. Sacramento State beat the Bears in five sets in the conference tournament championship match. UNC qualified for the National Invitational Volleyball Championship and reached the semifinals.
The Bears open their season hosting their UNC Classic Aug. 29-31 at Bank of Colorado Arena. UNC plays the University of Washington at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 29 and meets Colgate at 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30. Colgate and Washington play at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 31.

She is a 5-foot-11 junior middle blocker. Senior opposite Meline Shulikov was also selected for the Bengals.
Junior Isabel Bennett and sophomore Alayna Tessena were UNC’s representatives on the 10-player team.
Bennett, who is from Aurora and Grandview High, led the Big Sky in hitting percentage last year (.371). She plays in the middle of the court and has a role on defense and offense. Tessena is a 5-11 outside hitter from Medina, Ohio.
