The horrors of slavery can never be overstated
It is unfortunate that every American hasn’t had the opportunity to visit the Smithsonian Museums located in our nation’s capital. These museums are incredible treasures that display our nation’s history, both achievements and shortcomings.
The Smithsonian legacy was on display when President Trump toured the National Museum of African American History in February of 2017 where he said, “It’s a new, beautiful Smithsonian museum that serves as a shining example of African Americans’ incredible contributions to our culture, our society and our history.” He added, “It also tells of the great struggle for freedom and equality that prevailed against the sins of slavery and the injustice of discrimination. The work and love of the people who helped create such a masterpiece is a testament to the legacy of so many leaders.”
Contrast that with his comment this week, “… where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future.”
After multiple visits to the Museum of African American History, I know that the scholarship in telling the historical story is well researched — fair and balanced. At the same time, no history can fully explain how bad slavery truly is. The owning of another human being, the ability to separate and sell family members for profit are an abomination that words like horrible and bad can’t do justice to. The horrors of slavery can never be overstated.
One is left to wonder which words from the president we are to believe. Are his current words just another ploy to distract from failed promises? Including ending the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine on his first day in office, and the promised release of the Epstein files.
