The Ryne Sandberg memorial service is today, and fans can watch on the video board at Gallagher Way outside Wrigley Field from 9:30am CT until noon.
I went into that series thinking the NL Central was likely already decided, and I hadn’t planned to rethink that position unless the Cubs swept all five games (obviously) or maybe took four of five (because then they’d be 5.0 games out). Neither happened. So I’ll maintain that the best use of my Fan Feelings Focus is on that top Wild Card spot, where the Cubs could at least get home field for all three games of their Wild Card series. The Cubs currently have that spot by a game over the Padres. But none of that is to say that the series was not a success! Think about this: The Cubs took three of five from a team that has lost ONE GAME to a non-Cubs team SINCE JULY 26! That’s a great series win, and it helps the Cubs greatly in their quest for that top Wild Card spot. The series wasn’t at the heights of what we hoped, but still more positive than not. Call it a positive negative outcome. “I’d describe the series as we kind of held serve,” manager Craig Counsell said, per The Athletic. “We probably needed a little more. We win three out of five. That adds three wins, but today stings a little bit. Getting today’s game obviously would’ve been a big one. They played a better game than us.” The Cubs have to head out west now for a series in Anaheim, before finally getting an off-day on Monday. Notably absent from the starting lineup yesterday was Owen Caissie (we’ll get to the Kyle Tucker of it soon), and Craig Counsell would say only that he has to figure out how to involve everyone (Sun-Times): “We have a good problem in front of us now, trying to find some guys at-bats and keep them involved and keep them productive. It’s going to be a challenge, that’s what I’ll tell you. Owen has had a good three days here, an impactful three days, and helped us win some baseball games. That’s meaningful. It’s still going to be a challenge to find spots for him to get in there. But it’s my responsibility to do that. It’s a puzzle we’re going to have to put together moving forward.” © John E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images As for Matt Shaw not starting, even after being the hero the day before, that made plenty of sense. Day game after a night game, very long stretch with no off-days, young player, and a bad match-up. Cubs season ticket holders who renew as part of a three-year plan will be guaranteed access to 2027 All-Star Game tickets, per Jon Greenberg. Major news on the national TV front:NEWS: MLB & ESPN have an agreement to make the network the exclusive home of out-of-market games for all teams and in-market for five clubs, The Athletic has learned.Full details on MLB negotiations t.co/BtSGL0BujF
— Andrew Marchand (@AndrewMarchand) August 21, 2025 Basically, ESPN would be taking over MLB’s operations of MLB.tv (out-of-market games) and Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres, Minnesota Twins, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Colorado Rockies (in-market games). It would be for the next three years, which is notable, as that’s the timeline along which MLB would like to make more progress on its own national product (all games, no blackouts). Of course, it’s possible by then MLB will just want to sell the rights to ESPN once again, and we’ll look back at this moment as the start of MLB’s “national” product simply becoming an arm of ESPN. Honestly, I don’t think it really matters how MLB gets there so long as they do make progress on making virtually all games available to virtually all fans who want to watch them. It’s not a coincidence, by the way, that this news comes on the heels of ESPN’s launch of its own standalone streaming app, and its purchase of assets from the NFL. ESPN wants to remain “the” sports home, and this is the way to do it going forward. Cool:These lefty bats have been crushing left-handed pitchers!
