Cubs Confirm That Kyle Tucker Played Through a Fracture in His Hand ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Last night, as Kyle Tucker watched from the bench while the Cubs trying to hold off the Brewers in the later innings, ESPN dropped a report that was at once shocking and not at all surprising: when Tucker injured his hand on a slide back on June 1, he suffered a fracture. He and the Cubs didn’t know it initially, but later scans showed the injury. We never heard a peep about it.

Craig Counsell confirmed the report, and kind of shrugged off the late reveal:

The explanation is understandable, even if the timeline is very disappointing: because there was initially no sign of fracture on the X-Rays, Tucker kept playing. In early June, he was still raking, so there wasn’t any worry. Then, when the later scans showed a fracture, they also showed that it was healing. So Tucker kept playing, and, through June, he kept raking. It was only after things got really, really, really bad in July and August that things came to a head, and the Cubs had to sit Tucker down this week for a reset.

Then, of course, this report comes out, underscoring what everyone had been fearing all along: the injury, even if he was able to play through it initially, may have messed up Tucker’s mechanics. Counsell even went so far as to say, yes, in his opinion, there was probably a relationship there, even though the fracture has been fully healed for a long time.

What’s deeply disappointing about that storyline is that it took more than a month and a half of brutal underperformance for the Cubs and Tucker to, apparently, get on the same page about having him sit for a bit. How many games did the Cubs lose in the meantime? Could a game or two or three have turned in the other direction if someone had been filling in for Tucker, who, by the way, was still hitting in a prime spot in the lineup the entire time?

Even if we didn’t know about the original fracture, the Cubs did. The Cubs knew for weeks and weeks and weeks what might be playing out in front of their eyes, and they – and Tucker – simply let it go on.

I know that Injured List decisions are sensitive ones, that are a little more complicated that we sometimes make them out to be. Guys play through injuries all the time and we never hear about it because they perform just fine – so clearly, sometimes it’s the right decision to stay quiet and keep playing. Other times, you can tell with hindsight that there was a mistake in there somewhere. Maybe we can’t say precisely when would’ve been the right time to sit Tucker down, but I’ve gotta believe it was some point before he slumped for seven weeks.

Kyle Tucker will likely be back in the lineup this weekend, and all we can do now is hope that a mental/physical reset was all he needed. The fracture is long healed, so there’s not a physical issue there. And at least we know there’s an explanation there for why he has looked so off. Now it’s a matter of getting right again, and quickly. The Cubs still need Tucker’s bat if they’re going to be the best version of themselves down the stretch and into the postseason.
