Gervonta Davis could be stripped of his world title following the announcement of his controversial crossover clash with Jake Paul.
The WBA committee are set to review Davis’ status as their lightweight champion after the Baltimore boxer chose not to accept the major sanctioning body’s order for a rematch with Lamont Roach.
Davis chose to fight Paul instead of rematching RoachGETTYDavis was held to a disputed majority draw by Roach in March after the challenger was wrongfully denied a knockdown.
‘Tank’ took a knee in the ninth round when a jab skimmed his face.
Referee Steve Willis initially administered a count before breaking it off when Davis made his way over to his corner to have debris wiped from his eye.
By the letter of the law, Willis should have scored a knockdown, and if he had, Roach would have won on points.
Team Roach subsequently lodged an appeal to have the draw overturned, and while the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) upheld the result, they went on to admit that Willis had made the wrong call.
Shortly after, the WBA ordered a rematch, with the initial plan being for the fight to take place on June 21.
The date was then pushed back multiple times before Davis signed to fight Paul on November 14 in a stunning turn of events.
Due to the massive weight disparity between the pair, Davis vs Paul cannot be sanctioned as a professional contest and will therefore fall under the format of an exhibition bout.
Paul is a natural cruiserweight (200lbs) who tipped the scales at 227lbs for a heavyweight bout with Mike Tyson last year, while Davis has never boxed higher than super lightweight (140lbs).
The contracted weight and number of rounds for the fight, which is set to take place at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, are yet to be determined.

Paul’s attention then pivoted towards a showdown with former unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
Initial reports suggested that the fight had collapsed due to issues with the TV network.
However, Paul’s manager and business partner, Nakisa Bidarian, claims the fight is still in play for next year.
“I think it’s just a matter of hitting ‘go,'” Bidarian told ESPN.
“Jake is looking at it like he wants to show the world that he’s going to fight David, and then he plans to take on Goliath.”
