Suburban man kidnapped, bound woman with electrical cords before violent assault ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

A suburban man accused of kidnapping and binding a woman with electrical cords before violently assaulting her was found guilty by a jury Wednesday.

Darnell L. Rhodes, 34, of Elgin, was found guilty by a jury Wednesday for an aggravated kidnapping and assault that left a woman with extensive injuries, including numerous stab wounds and both eyes swollen shut.

In March 2023, Rhodes and two other men “kidnapped and violently assaulted a woman they knew,” authorities said.

The men threatened the victim with a knife and drove her to one of their residences, where they bound her with electrical cords to confine her, authorities said.

During the kidnapping, they stabbed the victim in four times in the legs and physically beat her, causing her left rib and right pinky to fracture and numerous other injuries, including bruises, trauma to her arm and blunt force injuries to her head and face.

The victim’s eyes were swollen shut from the assault, authorities said.

“This case involved one of the ugliest unprovoked attacks I have seen in 25 years as a prosecutor,” said Assistant State’s Attorney Mark Stajdohar, who presented the case against the men alongside ASA Matthew Picton. “All three of these men deserve to be in prison because of their heinous actions, and our communities are safer with them off the streets.”

The victim is still recovering from the “lasting impact of her injuries,” Stajdohar said, adding that she “has demonstrated remarkable courage and resilience each day as she works to rebuild her life.”

The Kane County jury found Rhodes guilty of aggravated kidnapping inflicting great bodily harm, a Class X felony, authorities said.

Rhodes’ next court appearance is set for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

The two men accused of the crimes alongside Rhodes are Lloyd D. Hayes Jr. and Roger A. Heaps.

Heaps pled guilty to one count of armed violence and was sentenced to 20 years of imprisonment in Illinois in January 2024.

Hayes Jr.’s case is still pending, though he faces 11 felony counts, including attempted murder, armed violence and aggravated kidnapping, authorities said. His next court date is 9 a.m. Sept. 12 for a status hearing.
