Jason Kelce has ESPN colleague in stitches with brutal Cleveland Browns QB joke ...Middle East

Jason Kelce has poked fun at the Cleveland Browns’ quarterback saga.

The Browns have sparked frenzied debate all offseason amid an intense starting competition between Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Shedeur Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel.

That competition has culminated in veteran Flacco being named the Week 1 starter against the Cincinnati Bengals.

However, the debate is far from over, with some fans criticising head coach Kevin Stefanksi for his reported depth chart, which has Pickett second and Gabriel and Sanders third and fourth, respectively.

Former Philadelphia Eagles star Kelce weighed in on Cleveland’s decision by delivering his take with a blend of patented humor.

“I think if one of these guys had been head and shoulders and the best guy, they would have went with him,” Kelce explained on ESPN.

“But they have Joe as the safety person to fall back on because of how well he did in 2023.

“Cleveland is not used to controversy at the QB position. It’s been a very stable position for a long time.”

It was that last comment that drew laughs from his co-analyst Ryan Clark, Marcus Spears, and Adam Schefter.

Spears in found Kelce’s sarcasm particularly hilarious as he burst into laughter.

Cleveland Brown’s quarterback struggles go back decades

The reason Kelce’s joke landed so well is because it’s so obviously true, painfully so for the Browns.

The Browns’ quarterback position has never been stable since they returned to the NFL in 1999, cycling through numerous starters.

Tim Couch, the franchise’s first expansion quarterback, came with lots of expectations when he was drafted as the No.1 pick in 1999.

However, a poor Browns’ offensive line and injuries hindered his development.

When veteran Jeff Garcia arrived in 2004, plenty of expectations came as Couch was dropped for him.

However, he would end up being cut after a year due to being a complete misfit with the team.

Quarterbacks like Charlie Frye, Deek Anderson, Brady Quinn and Cot McCoy, all followed, and failed to make the position their own.

The less said about Johnny Manziel the better.

Fast forward to 2018, and several quarterbacks later, Baker Mayfield, the No.1 pick, was thought to be the franchise’s long-term solution to the position.

However, after a strong start, injuries soon came and locker-room drama coupled with inconsistency saw him traded in 2021.

Then came Deshaun Watson, a blockbuster signing in 2022, but suspensions, off-field issues, poor performances and a season-ending injury in 2024 plunged the troubled Browns man into further obscurity.

More recently, the Browns re-signed Flacco and traded for Pickett while also drafting two quarterbacks in April’s draft, leaving them with four players, who all believe they can be Cleveland’s starter.

They then added Tyler Huntley to complicate matters further.

So, with the Browns’ endless quarterback carousel, it’s no surprise that Kelce’s sarcasm rang so painfully true.
