DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado is no stranger to strange animal encounters with police — earlier this year, police corralled a red kangaroo that had escaped its home just months after it made headlines for another escape attempt.

However, emus seem to pop up regularly in interactions with police. Just last year, an emu was found loose in Weld County, although law enforcement mistook the large bird as an ostrich.

Dennisaurus Rex, an emu who walks on a leash in Colorado Springs, is also a well-known figure to both residents and law enforcement — and has also been known to get loose, only to be recaptured by law enforcement.

Emus are legal to own as pets in Colorado, according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, alongside a range of animals, including bison, reindeer, alpaca and more. A full list of animals that are legal to own in Colorado by private citizens is available online here.

Readers may remember the Patagonia Mara seen on the loose in Lakewood near Bear Creek Lake Park last summer. The mammal is originally from Argentina and is illegal to own privately in Colorado. Or, readers may remember the deadly 2024 bite of a Gila monster illegally kept as a pet, also by a Lakewood resident.

On Monday, Lakewood police faced a different kind of animal that had gotten loose: An emu.

On Monday, law enforcement in Lakewood reported a "pretty emu-sing day" after finding an emu playing in the street at Colfax Avenue and Quail Street.

The Lakewood Police Department's animal control, patrol officers and Regional Transportation District police all came together to get the large bird back home.

"No word on if Doug was waiting for him or not," the agency quipped on social media, referencing the Disney movie "Up."
