MANCHESTER, N.Y. — A brush fire broke out behind the abandoned railroad roundhouse in Manchester, Ontario County, Monday afternoon. The roundhouse is the village’s most prominent historical building.
An acre of grass was burned, but the quick response from firefighters prevented the flames from reaching the building, said Manchester Fire Chief Rich Yahn.
No one was hurt in the fire.
The dry conditions may have contributed to the fire, the chief said. Investigators are still determining the cause.
“When we arrived on the scene the fire was almost 50 by 50, so I needed three brush trucks (Manchester, Shortsville and Farmington), and all the water I could get,” Yahn said.
The roundhouse, which is currently abandoned, was built by Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1916 and is one of the last surviving roundhouses in the eastern United States.
“The railroad is pretty much what put Manchester on the map — and the roundhouse is where they did all the maintenance on the engines,” the chief said.
