Whenever the Coby White trade market has heated up, the Chicago Bulls have fetched a pail of ice-cold water.
White’s contract situation has driven plenty of speculation around his future with one of the NBA’s marquee franchises. While the guard is extension eligible this summer, signing one would make zero sense. The 25-year-old is currently playing on an extremely team-friendly three-year, $36.0 million contract, meaning even his maximum extension offer (a deal that starts at 140 percent of the final year’s salary) would sit far below his real market value.
With that being the case, White will head into the 2025-26 campaign as an expiring contract. When he hits unrestricted free agency in 2026, he will have the option to leave the Chicago Bulls high and dry. Seeing a player of his caliber walk for nothing in return is always a tough pill to swallow, which is precisely why it behooves a front office to get ahead of things and assess the trade market.
Add in the fact that White is bound to draw a payday of $30.0+ million, and things become even more complicated. Are the Bulls ready to pay a starting backcourt of Josh Giddey and Coby White upwards of $50.0 million a year, particularly when they have yet to achieve anything of significance with those two leading the way?
Nevertheless, for as much sense as fielding calls on White might make, another report has surfaced that the Bulls are doing the opposite. Dallas Hoops Journal shared a quote from an executive last week that lets fans know how front office leader Arturas Karnisovas is handling interest in White this offseason:
“I know multiple teams tried to trade for Coby this summer,” the NBA exec said. “There was some chatter that he was almost traded on draft night. The Bulls love him, though. He’s not going anywhere. They have shot down trade inquiries for him.”
I encourage you to read the complete article from Dallas Hoops Journal and Ahsish Mathur for full context on the executive’s Coby White thoughts.

Earlier this offseason, Keith Smith of Spotrac shared a quote from an anonymous member inside the organization that declared the Chicago Bulls want Coby White around for “a long time.” On the one hand, that should make this latest buzz a lot less interesting. On the other hand, what else is a Bulls executive going to say?
Even if this were anonymous, the Bulls would be silly to publicly declare their intentions to trade White. That’s not a great way to increase leverage! This is why the latest comment from an outside NBA executive holds that much more weight, in my opinion. If the Bulls were truly listening on White, rival executives should not have a problem sharing that. Instead, we are simply hearing that the Bulls have rebuffed interest in the improving scorer.
On the one hand, we can all understand why they would be drawn to re-signing White next summer. He is coming off the best season of his career and has shown legitimate flashes of being an All-Star-caliber scorer. On the other hand, should the Bulls be taking any player off the table?
Especially if White is drawing interest from “multiple teams,” the Bulls would be silly not to hear out or negotiate some offers. After all, the more interest there is, the more valuable a player becomes. The Bulls have lost three consecutive Play-In Tournaments and have a single postseason series to show for since the conclusion of the 2016-17 season. When that’s the case, you MUST consider all options.
Now, is it possible that the Bulls will do exactly that once the season begins? Sure. Hanging up on calls now may be part of their strategy. However, there is a possibility that White’s value will never be higher than it is right now. Knowing that he is hitting unrestricted free agency, teams will likely want a full year of his services rather than just half a season.
Again, none of this means the Bulls HAVE to trade Coby White. We can sit here and make a case for both sides. But what I think is pretty black and white is that they should at least be open to the possibility. Time and again, this front office has run into trouble because of stubbornness and asset mismanagement. Tough decisions have to be made eventually.
