Syrian Interior Ministry reveals details of two security incidents in Aleppo ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

The Syrian Ministry of Interior revealed new details on Monday, August 18, about the explosion that occurred in the al-Maysar neighborhood, east of Aleppo (northern Syria).

Ministry spokesperson Nour al-Din al-Baba told the state-run al-Ikhbariya TV that investigations showed the perpetrator, a man with a criminal record and a drug user, detonated a grenade he was carrying following a dispute with his ex-wife’s family, contrary to earlier reports that he had used an explosive belt.

On Sunday, a man blew himself up near the al-Wahda bakery in al-Maysar, according to Enab Baladi’s correspondent. Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion was heard across much of the neighborhood, sparking panic among residents queuing for bread, while columns of smoke were seen rising from the site.

Enab Baladi’s correspondent confirmed that no civilian casualties or injuries were recorded.

Al-Maysar is one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in eastern Aleppo, with many residents having returned in recent years. This has fueled repeated concerns about the area being targeted during peak hours at bakeries and popular markets.

Assassination of former opposition commander in Azaz

Regarding the assassination of former Syrian opposition commander Alaa al-Din Ayoub, known as al-Farouq Abu Bakr, the Interior Ministry spokesperson said investigations are ongoing and promised an imminent announcement of the arrest of those involved, describing the killing as a “cowardly act.”

Ayoub was killed on Sunday, August 17, while leaving the Free Aleppo University in Azaz (northern Aleppo countryside, near the Turkish border). Two gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on his car before fleeing, according to surveillance footage reviewed by Enab Baladi.

Multiple eyewitnesses told Enab Baladi that Ayoub had just finished an exam at the university when he came under direct fire, which led to his death.

Security operations in Aleppo

Aleppo province has witnessed repeated security operations, most notably campaigns carried out by the Syrian Ministry of Interior against ISIS cells and remnants of the former regime.

On May 17, Aleppo’s Security Directorate, in cooperation with the General Intelligence Service, raided a hideout where an ISIS cell was based. The clashes left one member of the Internal Security Forces dead before the unit stormed the site, seizing explosive devices, a suicide vest, and several uniforms belonging to security personnel, according to the ministry.

US forces also conducted an operation against ISIS in the city of al-Bab (eastern Aleppo countryside, northern Syria), killing several members of the group.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced via X on July 25 that its forces carried out a raid in al-Bab at dawn, killing ISIS leader Dhiya’ Zawba Muslih al-Hardani and his two sons, Abdullah and  Abd al-Rahman.

CENTCOM said the three had posed a threat to US and Coalition forces as well as to the “new Syrian government.”

Enab Baladi’s correspondent in Aleppo, citing multiple local sources, reported that on July 25 the Syrian government, in coordination with the international Coalition, carried out its first joint operation against ISIS in al-Bab.
