More than a century after it was built by former Colorado Gov. Benjamin Eaton, the Eaton House — once home to irrigation and ditch workers — has been lovingly restored and reopened to the public.
The town of Windsor and Windsor Museums hosted a grand reopening to showcase the restoration to the public Friday at 100 5th St.
Eaton built the house in 1902 as a home for his irrigation and ditch workers. Eaton, who also served as a Weld County commissioner, played a large role in the state’s irrigation history and agricultural heritage.
“I feel like it’s good for anyone to look back and see what it was like back then,” Windsor Mayor Julie Cline said Friday. “It allows people to just take that step back to when we didn’t have cellphones, we didn’t have all the technology, but we were able to live comfortably at that time.”
The house received a lot of “TLC,” Cline said.

Rehabilitation work included updating the house to meet modern standards and codes, allowing it to be made into a functional space while maintaining the historical character of the building.
Since May, the house has hosted summer camps, preschool programs, meetings and other events. Cline said the house provides a perspective of life back then, and its proximity to Boardwalk Park and Windsor Lake could make for an ideal day for families to spend together.
The physical preservation work cost more than $700,000. The Cache la Poudre National Heritage Area, which now uses the house as its headquarters, provided two grants for the project, totaling $50,000. The Windsor-Severance Historical Society provided additional support.
Beth Bullard and Rylyn Todd of the Cache la Poudre National Heritage Area on Friday expressed their gratitude to the town of Windsor. They said the event was a great day for history as well as a chance for others to learn about their organization.
The town purchased the Eaton House from a private resident in 2004. Until 2020, it served as a warehouse for oversized artifacts from the collection of the Windsor Museums.
In 2016, the house was designated as a local landmark. The house was one of many that Eaton built for his irrigation and ditch workers throughout the region.
