“Syrian Interior Ministry” removes checkpoints from areas in Syria’s coast ...Syria

News by : (ُEnabbaladi) -

The Syrian Ministry of Interior has removed checkpoints belonging to the Internal Security Forces from towns and villages in Syria’s coastal region.

Enab Baladi observed the removal of checkpoints in some main cities and villages in Latakia and Tartus, retaining only a few checkpoints on the outskirts of Baniyas and Jableh along the coast.

In Baniyas, Internal Security Forces removed the checkpoint near “al-Khader Hospital” and the “Cultural Center” checkpoint, in addition to those at the entrances of villages in Jableh city.

The Ministry of Interior spokesperson, Nour al-Din al-Baba, told Enab Baladi that this change is “based on a national vision already adopted by the ministry.”

Al-Baba attributed these steps to the ministry’s accumulated experience, the availability of security control tools, and increased trust and coordination between the Internal Security Forces and citizens in coastal cities.

In his remarks to Enab Baladi, al-Baba said the presence of these checkpoints was an emergency and temporary measure dictated by circumstances, while the basis should be reliance on technical means that reduce friction between security personnel and citizens—something the ministry is working toward, according to him.

Mobile patrols in Latakia

A Syrian army vehicle was attacked by groups of “remnants of the regime” in Latakia countryside, after reports of relative calm in the area in recent weeks.

The Ministry of Defense’s Department of Media and Communication stated in a press release published by the official “SANA” agency that a Syrian army vehicle was attacked on Thursday, August 14, by groups it described as “remnants of the defunct regime” in Latakia countryside, without causing human casualties.

The ministry noted that the past three days witnessed an increase in attacks carried out by these groups, targeting army forces in Latakia and Tartus countryside.

According to the agency, the coastal region had recently witnessed a state of stability following the reinforcement of army and public security deployments in several rural and border areas, as part of “ongoing efforts to eliminate remnants of the defunct regime who sought to spread chaos and destabilize the region.”

Nour al-Din Primo, head of media relations in Latakia Governorate, told Enab Baladi that the security situation is “very good” in the governorate, except for the incident targeting the Ministry of Defense vehicle on Thursday in Latakia countryside.

Primo pointed out that military positions were reinforced, security alert levels raised, and mobile patrols increased in the governorate with the aim of “controlling the area, protecting residents and civil peace, and preventing any attempts to destabilize security.”

Repeated attacks

Attacks on security and military forces by remnants of the former regime began just days after the fall of Assad’s rule.

On December 14, 2024, only six days after the regime’s collapse, three members of the “Military Operations Directorate” were killed and others wounded in an armed ambush in Latakia countryside.

On December 26, 2024, 14 members of the Ministry of Interior were killed and ten others injured after an ambush by remnants of the former regime in the village of Khirbet al-Ma’zah in Tartus countryside.

A group affiliated with remnants of the former regime captured seven members of the “General Security Directorate” during a security campaign in Jableh on January 14.

At that time, security and military forces were put on high alert, using drones and helicopters in pursuit of the remnants. They managed to free their captured personnel and kill a commander in the remnants’ groups, Bassam Hossam al-Din, leader of the “Lions of the Mountain” militia.

Cities of the coastal region in western Syria, in Tartus and Latakia, witnessed bloody events sparked by movements of remnants of the former regime on March 6.

These events resulted in 803 deaths among Syrian public security forces and civilians killed by members of factions loyal to the Syrian state for sectarian reasons, according to documentation by the “Syrian Network for Human Rights.”
