A new U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention center is planned for Indiana, officials said Tuesday.

The Department of Homeland Security revealed plans to expand ICE detention space by 1,000 beds with the opening of what it called “The Speedway Slammer.”

The beds will be made available at the Miami Correction Center, and though no official date was released, officials said the facility is “coming soon.”

“Today, we’re announcing a new partnership with the state of Indiana to expand detention bed space by 1,000 beds,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement. “Thanks to Governor Braun for his partnership to help remove the worst of the worst out of our country. If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Indiana’s Speedway Slammer.”

Indiana Gov. Mike Braun called the move an “innovative partnership” and said Indiana “is taking a comprehensive and collaborative approach to combating illegal immigration.”

Auto racing body IndyCar said it was not affiliated with the facility despite the use of imagery in social media posts made by DHS announcing the move.

“We were unaware of plans to incorporate our imagery as part of yesterday’s announcement. Consistent with our approach to public policy and political issues, we are communicating our preference that our IP not be utilized moving forward in relation to this matter,” the group said in a statement Wednesday.

Speedway, Indiana, home of Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is 71 miles from Bunker Hill, where the Miami Correctional Center is located.

DHS claimed the new beds would house the “worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens arrested by ICE.”

The facility has been likened to Florida’s so-called “Alligator Alcatraz,” which President Donald Trump has touted as fit for the “worst of the worst,” and Noem has said would serve as a model for other state-run holding facilities for immigrants.

NBC News asked Florida officials for a list of detainees at “Alligator Alcatraz” but has not received the list. Last month, a Human Rights Watch report found that nearly 72% of people detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement had no criminal history, despite the Trump administration’s claims.

Civil rights advocates and environmental groups have filed lawsuits against the Everglades facility, where detainees allege they’ve been forced to go without adequate food and medical care, and been barred from meeting with their attorneys, held without any charges and unable to get a federal immigration court to hear their cases.

A federal judge on Wednesday is set to hear arguments over whether to stop construction of the immigration detention center because it didn’t follow environmental laws.

Meanwhile, Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis‘ administration is apparently preparing to build a second immigration detention center.
