Michigan’s Punishment, New Leader In ND QB Competition, Cold Seats, and Other Big Ten (& Notre Dame) Bullets ...Middle East

Word came down today that we’ll finally get a resolution to the Michigan sign-stealing scandal from their National Championship year in 2023. How bad will it be? Plus, we have a new development in Notre Dame’s quarterback battle, and The Athletic released a list of coaches on the hot seat entering the season, and it appears the Big Ten is pretty safe for now!

Let’s get to it.

Big Ten Bullets

It sounds like tomorrow will be a pretty newsworthy day for Michigan football. According to ESPN’s college football insider Pete Thamel, the NCAA formally informed all parties involved in the Michigan infractions case that punishments will be handed out on Friday. It feels like this has been going on for quite some time now, and it’s been nearly two years since the news of the sign-stealing allegations against Michigan broke.

The NCAA has formally notified parties tied to the Michigan NCAA infractions case that an announcement on the findings and punishments will be publicly released on Friday, sources tell me and @DanWetzel.

— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) August 14, 2025 As for what the actual sanctions will be, well, we’ll find out for sure tomorrow, but if you’re someone hoping for a postseason ban, vacated wins, or a vacated national title, I wouldn’t hold your breath. Anything can happen, of course, but in Thamel’s article on ESPN, he noted that fines and suspensions are the most likely penalties to be handed out. Look for head coach Sherrone Moore to be suspended for a couple of games, a very hefty fine handed to the university, and former head coach Jim Harbaugh to be ‘punished’ with some sort of college football ban or suspension should he ever want to return to the college ranks, which seems quite unlikely at this point. Moving on to some on-field news, we have yet another quarterback battle update as another day goes by! Going back to South Bend, On3’s Pete Nakos reported this morning that sophomore Kenney Minchey appears to be holding a slight lead over former five-star recruit CJ Carr. Now, the battle appears far from over, and Carr, by all reports, seems to be having a perfectly fine camp. But as of now, it feels like Minchey may be holding a slight lead.

Sources have given Kenny Minchey the slight edge to this point in Notre Dame camp. CJ Carr still has time to beat out Minchey for the starting job and earn the nod against Miami. t.co/0NzTMekcjd

— Pete Nakos (@PeteNakos_) August 14, 2025 The book on this battle so far has been that Minchey may be a little more careful with the football, while Carr tends to trust his big arm to make some high-risk throws. With Notre Dame heading to Miami for a road opener against a top-ten team, being a little more cautious with your quarterback and their decision-making seems like a sound game plan. For what it’s worth, Bruce Straughton, who covers the squad for The Irish Tribune, reported that Carr had a great practice last night and made some outstanding throws. It seems like we have a fun, high-end QB battle going on in South Bend that could go right down to the wire. Yesterday, for The Athletic, college football reporter Bruce Feldman released a list of coaches on the hot seat in each conference entering the season. When scrolling to the Big Ten, I was slightly surprised to see just one name – Mike Locksley – on Feldman’s list. Locksley led Maryland to winning seasons in 2021, 2022, and 2023 before seeing a drop-off last year. Feldman reported, though, that despite the drop off, Locksley’s seat might not actually be even that hot: “Locksley’s seat actually isn’t as warm as many might think. According to sources inside the program, Locksley is so well-respected locally and has built up so much goodwill in his time there that they will be patient with him to try to get things headed back in the right direction.” It’s pretty wild that, entering the new season, a conference as big and prestigious as the Big Ten feels so stable in its coaching ranks. For what it’s worth, I’m a little surprised to see Luke Fickell not on that list after Wisconsin underachieved the past two seasons and faces a brutal schedule this year. But it does show that the conference is in a pretty solid spot regarding coaching. If you’re interested in recruiting classes, Keegan Pope of Yahoo Sports did a pretty solid, in-depth breakdown of the Big Ten’s recruiting class rankings for the 2026 class earlier this week. As it stands now, Lincoln Riley and USC maintain the top class heading into the college football season.
