The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) accused the Islamic State of kidnapping members of the Deir Ezzor Military Council, which is affiliated with them.
In a statement today, Thursday, August 14, the Military Council said that a group of four members was subjected to a “terrorist” abduction by an alleged ISIS-affiliated group.
The statement added that the members were on a non-military mission, outside their official duties, to receive treatment at a pharmacy in the town of al-Hawaij, east of Deir Ezzor.
According to the statement, the Council carried out a “precise” military operation resulting in the killing of one of the abductors and wounding three others, affirming that the operation will continue as planned.
The Islamic State has not yet claimed any operations in Deir Ezzor.
The Military Council announced the initiation of an “immediate and comprehensive” investigation to examine the circumstances of the incident and determine responsibilities, emphasizing that it will maintain all information and details relating to the incident until the investigation is completed and necessary procedures are taken.
The Council stressed its rejection of attempts to destabilize the region and affirmed that it will pursue “terrorism wherever it resides,” escalating operations against “anyone who threatens the lives of our children and the achievements of our people,” in its words.
An Enab Baladi correspondent reported that the SDF withdrew from the town of Gharanij, located east of Deir Ezzor, approximately 80 km from al-Hawaij, following clashes that occurred last night, Wednesday, August 13.
The clashes occurred after unidentified gunmen kidnapped four SDF members, prompting the SDF to raid the town and clash with residents, resulting in civilian injuries.
According to the correspondent, SDF members besieged the homes of the al-Hayis and al-Muhidi families in Gharanij, but found them empty, with only children and women inside.
SDF also launched wide-ranging sweeps and raids in the towns of al-Jay’ah and al-Janeenah, targeting homes belonging to the al-Olayan family, and brought military reinforcements into al-Janeenah west of Deir Ezzor.
Clashes Between Government Forces and SDF
In a related development, heavy clashes erupted between the Syrian Ministry of Defense forces and the SDF in Deir Ezzor early this morning, coinciding with shelling inside the city.
A source within the Ministry of Defense, who asked not to be named, told Enab Baladi that the exchange of fire across the Euphrates River occurred after shots were fired from SDF-controlled areas toward Syrian army positions, which responded to the origin of the fire.
An Enab Baladi correspondent in Deir Ezzor reported “violent” clashes between the Ministry of Defense and SDF forces concentrated in the al-Bughayliyah area (under government control) and al-Jeneina in western Deir Ezzor countryside (under SDF control).
Both sides used machine guns and RPGs during the confrontations, injuring a fisherman near the UN headquarters by the “Badiyat al-Sham” hotel, according to the correspondent.
These clashes were accompanied by explosions heard within Deir Ezzor city.
Additional clashes erupted between the government’s 66th Division stationed on the banks of the Euphrates in al-Duweir and SDF fighters in Ghraneej on the opposite bank.
As of this report’s release, neither the Syrian government nor the SDF has issued statements regarding the clashes.
