Triple-A Iowa Cubs
Iowa dropped its opener with the Worcester Red Sox, but the story of the night was none other than Owen Caissie. As the big league club struggles, Caissie is thriving for Iowa and making the case that he deserves a call-up. After Iowa fell behind 2-0 last night, the Cubs’ top prospect blasted his 22nd home run of the season, a two-run shot that tied that game up. Unfortunately, Iowa gave the lead right back and allowed runs in three of the last four innings, though, and ultimately fell 7-4.
However, in addition to the home run, Caissie picked up two more hits to go 3-5 for the game and scored another run as well. With all the offensive struggles for the Chicago Cubs right now, it might be time for Caissie to get a look, at the very least to inject some life into the lineup.

Every once in a while, recapping these minor league games, we’ll get a bit of a dud without much to write about. Last night’s Smokies game was one of those matchups. Knoxville dropped their opener with the Rocket City Trash Pandas (I love that name so much) 5-0. They recorded just three hits in the game, though they did draw five walks as well. However, the Smokies left all of those eight baserunners stranded on the day, and they went 0-3 in RISP situations.
Grant Kipp started on the mound. He wasn’t good, but he wasn’t terrible either. Kipp went four innings, allowed three runs and seven hits, struck out three, and walked two.

High-A South Bend Cubs
After six innings without much offense, the South Bend Cubs used a big seventh inning to catapult themselves to a win on Tuesday. Entering the seventh inning, the Sky Carp held a 1-0 lead they picked up on a third-inning sacrifice fly. In the top of the seventh, South Bend started with a leadoff walk from Reginald Preciado, then followed with back-to-back singles by Rafael Morel and Leonel Espinoza.
With the bases loaded and no one out, South Bend scored on a wild pitch, then added two more on an Edgar Alvarez two-RBI single to make it 3-1. In the eighth, the Cubs added one more run on an RBI double from Morel, and they went on to win 4-2.

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Let’s wrap things up with a fun one! The Pelicans easily dispatched the Columbia Fireflies in their opener on Tuesday with a 10-1 win. Myrtle Beach scored runs in five of the first six frames and held a seven-run lead before the Fireflies even got on the board. Matt Halbach had the lone long ball of the evening for the Pelicans with a solo shot in the third. Ty Southisene had two hits, two runs, and two RBI in a strong effort. On the mound, Alfredo Romero limited Columbia to just one hit over five innings of work.
