Huddersfield Town vs Leicester City predictions
Leicester City fans may have expected a straightforward start to the new Championship season under crisis club Sheffield Wednesday, but it was anything but.
Wednesday took a surprise lead at the King Power Stadium, and although Leicester equalised in the second half, the Owls looked to be heading for a respectable point on the opening weekend.
Instead, the long-serving captain Barry Bannan was sent off in the 76th minute, before Wout Faes headed home a winner towards the end.
Leicester certainly had to work hard for all three points in their first competitive game after relegation, but Marti Cifuentes was pleased that his team kept going and eventually got over the line.
“Always with the first game of the season there’s a lot of emotion, there is a lot of tension and it’s not easy to have a perfect performance,” the new manager said in an interview with BBC Leicester after the game.
“So credit to the players and the fans that we stick together and we manage to turn around a difficult start. It creates good self-confidence but the reality of football is that we need to keep improving, keep pushing because we need to get better as a team.”
Needless to say, Leicester supporters would happily sacrifice the FA Cup and EFL Cup if it meant them winning promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
Cifuentes will not think the same way, though. Promotion is obviously the aim, but there is no chance of him throwing this game.
The Leicester boss knows that his team need to build momentum and start to restore confidence and optimism after a bruising relegation under his predecessor Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The only way to do that is by winning games, so Leicester will take this first-round tie at the Accu Stadium seriously.
It will not be an easy match for them, though, with Huddersfield Town off to a flyer in League One.
The Terriers have asserted their promotion credentials with back-to-back victories over Leyton Orient (3-0) and Reading (2-0). League tables are not very meaningful at this stage of the season, but Huddersfield sit at the summit as things stand.
Lee Grant’s side will now turn their attention to the EFL Cup, as they aim to take a Championship scalp in the form of Leicester.

Huddersfield Town and Leicester City are ready to go at it in the first round of the EFL Cup.
Leicester to win
Huddersfield hope to be in the Championship next season, so this is a welcome opportunity to make a statement of intent against a team currently in the second tier.
But although they were not at their best at the weekend, Leicester have enough quality to win this match.
Leicester have a thin squad due to financial difficulties, so Cifuentes will not be able to make too many changes to his starting XI.
The manager will also be keen to build rhythm and fluency as he continues to get his ideas across to the group.
Huddersfield have lost five of their last six meetings with Leicester, and we expect Wednesday’s encounter to follow that pattern.
Back Leicester to win at 10/11 with SBK
Leicester over 1.5 goals
Huddersfield have impressed at both ends of the pitch so far, scoring five goals without conceding in League One.
We like their chances of finding the back of the net on Wednesday against a Leicester team that was poor defensively last season, albeit at a higher level.
That means the Foxes would need to score twice to emerge triumphant, and even without the departed Jamie Vardy they have the talent to do that.
Leicester struck twice against Sheffield Wednesday and they are capable of doing so again when they face another opponent from Yorkshire in Huddersfield.
Choose Leicester to score over 1.5 goals at 4/5 with Betfred
Stephy Mavididi to score any time
With Vardy departing at the end of his contract, it is vital that Leicester keep hold of Stephy Mavididi for the entire campaign.
The 27-year-old scored 13 goals in all competitions when the Foxes were last in the Championship, and he will be key to their ambitions this year.
Mavidid insists he is focused only on collective objectives, but deep down Mavididi will surely want to better his 2023/24 tally.
“I don’t like to set myself individual targets, but obviously the target is clear for everyone and that’s what we want to achieve,” he said recently.
Mavididi can get off and running for the season with a goal against Huddersfield.
