Three people were killed when a gunman opened fire in a Target parking lot in North Austin Monday afternoon. Austin Police say the suspected shooter is in custody after stealing two cars while making his getaway.
Austin Police said that they were called to a shooting at the store at about 2:15 p.m. and arrived to find three gunshot victims in the parking lot. Two of the victims were deceased when officers arrived and the third later died at an area hospital.
In a post on X at about 3 p.m., Austin Police warned those in the area that the “suspect is still at large” and “DO NOT APPROACH.” During a news conference, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed the suspect, described as a 32-year-old white man with a mental health history, had been detained.
“We have three people that are deceased,” Davis said. “This is a very sad day for Austin. It’s a very sad day for us all and my condolences go out to the families.”
Davis said that investigators have not determined what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting, but that after two people were shot, a third person was shot when the man stole a car to make his getaway.
The man later crashed the stolen car and took another vehicle, possibly from a car dealership, before Austin Police used a Taser to apprehend him on the city’s south side.
Investigators are reviewing video surveillance and talking to witnesses to find out what might have led to the shooting.
Video from KXAN-TV, the NBC affiliate in the state capital, showed customers and employees being evacuated from the store. Austin Police said cars parked in the parking lot will not be able to be moved until the investigation is complete and that shoppers should make other arrangements to get home.
