Midsummer Scream brings horror back to Long Beach ...Middle East

News by : (Los Angeles Daily News) -

Another frightening weekend filled with monsters, zombies, killer clowns and everything horror fans love returns as Midsummer Scream Halloween and Horror Convention opens its dark gates in downtown Long Beach.

About 50,000 people are expected to attend the Aug. 15-17 event when it takes over the Long Beach Convention Center where people can expect to see fans dressed up in horror-themed costumes, meet celebrities, shop for all sorts of scary gear and goods, check out panels and walk through professional and homemade haunts.

“We deliver a fantastic show that provides people something to do at every minute that we’re open. There’s always something to check out,” said David Markland, executive director and co-founder of Midsummer Scream.

The full lineup will be updated on the Midsummer Scream app, which Markland advises people to get so they can create their schedule for the busy weekend.

But one of the first things Markland thinks people should check out on day one is the vendor show floor, where more than 350 booths will be selling horror-themed merch like costumes, props, clothing, decorations and more.

“Every day is busy but Friday night you’re going to get your first chance to get limited edition items some of the vendors have,” he said.

Some of the more popular vendors that typically have long lines include Backstitch Bruja, which sells things like Halloween themed shirts, wallets and bags. Now the vendor is also selling suits people can put on Labubu plush toy collectables.

While the shopping area is always packed, horror fans also quickly make their way to the very popular Hall of Shadows, where the walk-in haunts are set up. This year there are 18 attractions set up in the darkened indoor space that include walk-through haunts and displays.

The theme for the Hall of Shadows this year is “Le Carnaval du Diable,” featuring and entryway clouded in a foggy woodland that will lead to a sinister old world carnival hosted by a soul-collecting clown named Mr. Floats.

“It really sets the tone. It has a maze and roaming characters with this devil circus theme,” Markland said.

For those 21 years and older there will be a themed bar called The Smashed Pumpkin, and after getting a drink you better watch your back because the Decayed Brigade, a group of costumed haunt sliders who love to slide up on people, will perform throughout the weekend in a new show dubbed  “Fear the Skid, Honor the Slide.”

People also go to Midsummer Scream to meet celebrities and the list this year includes horror master John Carpenter, who will be there on Saturday only, and  Cassandra Peterson, better known as Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Lines to meet the horror star have always been among the longest at the convention during her previous appearances so this year Peterson will be at there Saturday and Sunday.

Other celebrity guests making appearances throughout the weekend include David Howard Thornton, who portrays the evil murderous Art the Clown from the “Terrifier” films, Greg Nicotero, the executive producer of “The Walking Dead,” and “ayyyy” even the Fonz will be there as Henry Winkler is set to meet fans on Sunday.

“He is the least horror guy we’ve ever had as a guest, but he was in ‘Scream,’ and we can’t not have Henry Winkler,” Markland said.

Horror fans may be able to look into the future and get a hint of what awaits them this Halloween season as the big theme park haunts like Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights and Knott’s Scary Farm, plus the Queen Mary’s Dark Harbor host presentations where they usually make some announcements about what they have coming up.

People will also want to be on the lookout for Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group presentation on Saturday where representatives will discuss their events, which include the LA Haunted Hayride, Magic of the Jack O’Lanterns, Delusion, and their new Festival Fright Nights at Winchester Mystery House.

New this year is a tribute to “The Conjuring,” franchise. In anticipation of the Sept. 5 release of “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” the convention will include a walk-through experience that will put people inside the movie.

“It’s kind of a hide-and-seek experience where you enter the world of The Conjuring. You are going to be in that world and try to evade the monsters in that world,” Markland said.

“I think people are already just jacked for Halloween,” he said.
