Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker appears to be keeping his future career options open, as revealed in a Sunday interview.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” with Kristen Welker, the two-term governor said he’s focused on winning a third term in 2028, but refused to rule out the possibility of a presidential run.
“I can’t rule anything out, but what I can rule in is that no matter what decisions I make, and I mean in particular about what I do here in the State of Illinois is about the people of Illinois,” he said. “Indeed, any future decisions of mine will always be guided by that.”
In recent months, Pritzker has raised his national profile ahead of a potential presidential candidacy. His national press coverage has been steadily increasing this year, even before he welcomed a group of Texas lawmakers who remain in Illinois as they protest a Republican redistricting effort in that state.
In early May, he traveled to Los Angeles to appear on the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show, where he amplified his criticism of President Donald Trump in a turn on the national stage. Just days later, Pritzker was the headliner at the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s McIntyre-Shaheen 100-Club Dinner.
Through a previous Freedom of Information Act request, NBC 5 Investigates obtained the governor’s calendar for the first three months of the year, which showed interviews from traditional national outlets such as MSNBC, CNN, Washington Post and AP, along with popular podcasts like American Fever Dream and Raging Moderates. His appearance on the MeidasTouch podcast from March 20 has 1.2 million views.
A vocal critic of Trump, Pritzker’s announcement of his re-election campaign in June featured a nod to national politics.
“Donald Trump’s made clear he’ll stop at nothing to get his way. I’m not about to stand by and let him tear down all we’re building in Illinois. I’m running for re-election to protect our progress and continue solving the problems we face,” he said. “I love this state and it’s the honor of my life to serve as your governor, to help lead through the most challenging of times and celebrate the most joyful ones together. I’m ready for the fight ahead.”
