Chicago Cubs Lineup: Finale in St. Louis ...Middle East

CUBS LINEUP — Last night’s offensive outburst was nice to see, but we’re gonna need more than a one-game blip to start feeling better about this offense again. Whether or not that comes today against Sonny Gray, however, is a different question entirely. Here’s a look at the Chicago Cubs lineup for the finale and rubber match against the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

Do again tonight what you did last night. Pretty simple.

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Shota Imanaga, LHP

Shota Imanaga got roughed up by the White Sox (of all teams) just before the deadline, but he had a moderate bounce back against the Brewers (5.0 IP, 5H, 3ER, 0BB, 8K) and then looked fully like himself against the Reds his last time out: 6.1 IP, 3H, 1ER, 0BB, 7K.

I’m especially encouraged to see the declining walk rate and ballooning strikeouts of late, because that part of his game was conspicuously missing earlier this season, even when the results were still good:

Also working in his favor this evening (aside from his own personal momentum) is the fact that the Cardinals have not been very good vs left-handed pitching this season: 96 wRC+.

St. Louis Cardinals: Sonny Gray, RHP

If you looked only at his 4.21 ERA, you might be under the impression that Sonny Gray hasn’t been very good this year. But that’s not really the case. Even if he’s not the guy he was in his prime, he’s got a 26.8% strikeout rate and a 4.0% walk rate, which amounts to the second-best K/BB ratio in baseball, behind only Tarik Skubal.

And it’s not like his barrel rate or hard hit rate are particularly bad. They’re not great by any means, but he should be getting far better results than he has. We just have to hope that he doesn’t start positively regressing today against a Cubs lineup that, until last night, had really struggled to score runs.

But there’s a little more context to discuss, too, because Gray has had a pretty strange five-game stretch here. What began as back-to-back 3.0 inning outings snowballed into a brutal stretch of runs allowed … before culiminating in a 7.0 IP, 1-hit, 1-walk, 8K performance against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. That’s as up-and-down as it gets.
