Bears 24, Dolphins 24: Fly The T at Soldier Field ...Middle East

The Chicago Bears still haven’t lost a preseason game since 2023.

FINAL: Chicago Bears 24, Miami Dolphins 24 (ESPN Box Score)

Thoughts on the Bears’ preseason opener

This game had almost everything you could have asked for as a football fan watching an exhibition game. For me, it starts with coaches rolling the dice on the money downs. The teams combined to go for it nine times on fourth down. They converted only three attempts, which helps explain why this game ended in a tie. It will be interesting to see how first-year Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s fourth-down philosophy plays out in regular-season games. If you are a fan who was looking for a second-year player to take a developmental leap, then you probably marked down Austin Booker as a player to watch for the rest of this summer. A fifth-round pick in 2024, Booker was a stat-sheet stuffer on Sunday against the Dolphins. Booker collected 3 sacks, 3 tackles-for-loss, 4 quarterback hits, and 6 total tackles. Now, that is how you impress your new coaches.

Speaking of the new-look Bears coaching staff, I love that Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen threw the kitchen sink at rookie quarterback Quinn Ewers with the game on the line. In the waning moments of the fourth quarter, Allen called for an all-out blitz on Ewers to force an incompletion and a turnover on downs. It’s the kind of play that makes me wonder if Ewers has second thoughts about not returning to school and getting a bag to play against college foes. It was a treat seeing a fired-up Ben Johnson after the defense forced a 4th-and-goal stop on the team’s first defensive possession:

How did the three Bears perform?

Kyle Monangai — The rookie running back made the most of his six carries on Sunday. Monangai picked up 30 yards and averaged 5.0 per carry. A 13-yard long did a bulk of the heavy lifting for the Rutgers product, who ran hard and with a purpose. If fellow running back Roschon Johnson is unavailable in preseason Week 2, I hope it leads to more Monangai out of the backfield. His running style is aesthetically pleasing.

Theo Benedet — A second-year player who was a fan favorite after his shenanigans on HBO’s “Hard Knocks” last year, Benedet saw some time at left tackle on Sunday. Admittedly, it is tough to judge offensive linemen immediately after a game. But it feels meaningful that the Bears trust Benedet enough to put him in a position to protect a quarterback’s blindside.

Ozzy Trapilo —  Even though Braxton Jones got the start with the first-team offense, we did see rookie offensive lineman Ozzy Trapilo spend a chunk of time at left tackle. Even though this coaching staff has said it looks forward to seeing Kiran Amegadjie get healthy and back in the mix, I still think this competition comes down to Ozzy and Braxton.

WHAT’S NEXT: Preseason Week 2 vs. the Buffalo Bills, 7:15 p.m. CT on FOX-32

Chicago’s football team returns to action next week against the Buffalo Bills. They will welcome back old friend Mitchell Trubisky (and the rest of the Bills) for joint practices at Halas Hall. If someone has a sense of humor, they’ll play “tv off” by Kendrick Lamar at some point during next week’s joint session.

We will have more for you later on the Bears’ preseason tie with the Miami Dolphins. Please enjoy the rest of your Sunday.
