Hour 979 of Josh Giddey Watch …
The silence is deafening. As we head toward mid-August, the restricted free agent market around the NBA remains at a standstill. Josh Giddey, Jonathan Kuminga, Quentin Grimes, and Cam Thomas have yet to reach a new deal with their respective teams. In fact, none of those four have come anywhere close. Not only are front offices playing ultimate hardball, but one has to imagine that no player wants to be the first to sign. Especially if you’re the best of the restricted free agents, like Josh Giddey, you want to ensure that none of those players secure a better payday. The only movement we have seen over the last couple of days centers around Josh Giddey possibly having some sign-and-trade interest around the league. The Golden State Warriors have been the only team specifically mentioned, but NBA insider Jake Fischer shared that multiple Eastern Conference teams have explored the idea. With that said, while Giddey’s camp can certainly put pressure on the Bulls to pursue a trade, Fischer continues to suggest that they have zero plans to do so. Here is what he said in his latest piece for The Stein Line Substack:“I’m told that the Warriors continue to value Giddey’s skillset and have communicated their interest to the Australian point guard’s representation. There simply does not appear to be a feasible pathway to such a trade,” Fischer shared.
At the end of the day, I think this sign-and-trade talk is mainly just some gamesmanship from Giddey’s people. They are reminding the Bulls’ front office that they have a desirable client, and stirring up all this interest could only scare Arturas Karnisovas more that Giddey would accept the qualifying offer. For what it’s worth, we at least seem to be inching closer to at least one RFA going down this road. Fischer also reported in his Substack article that Cam Thomas is showing an “increasing interest” in taking the QO risk. If one player bites the bullet, could it start a chain reaction? Sports Illustrated pitched a fake trade that would send RJ Barrett to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Patrick Williams, Jevon Carter, and a future first-round pick. Would you do it? If one thing is for sure, moving off both Williams and Carter for Barrett would be a roster upgrade. But I am pretty against giving up any future draft capital right now, unless it’s the lottery-protected first-rounder from the Portland Trail Blazers. I understand why you would have to do it in a deal like this, but I am not sure Barrett moves the needle enough for this team to make it worth it. Likewise, the swingman is owed a hefty $27.7 million this season and $29.6 million next season. Does he fit the mold of a “young player with experience?” Absolutely, but this feels like the kind of trade you make only after evaluating this current group and establishing a better sense of how close you are to being truly competitive. Ayo Dosunmu is an elite teammate confirmed. The Bulls’ guard posted an Instagram story this weekend that appears to show him at Alex Caruso’s wedding!
